Fortuna

Fortuna is a large terra-class planet in the Alpha Centauri star system, the fourth of five planets orbiting Rigil Kentaurus, cobinary with its smaller counterpart Concordia, and humanity's first permanent presence outside the solar system. In the modern day Fortuna is one of the most populous worlds in the UNH sphere of influence, over six billion strong, and its people have adapted to the moderately intense gravity and learned to coexist with the planet's thriving native biosphere. In high orbit over Fortuna is the city-station Chiron, serving as the capital of the Centauri Republic.

Geography

Location

Fortuna is the fourth planet orbiting the star Rigil Kentaurus, the brighter component of the Alpha Centauri binary star, and is itself part of a binary planet pair. It has four natural satellites: a selenic planetoid named Pax in its immediate orbital sphere, a small terran planetoid with a thriving biosphere named Concordia that forms the smaller component of the binary planet, and two large asteroids named Sors and Spero that orbit the binary. Fortuna also has several million artificial satellites to support its human civilization.

Surface

Fortuna is suffused by a deep global ocean, within which lie eight continents; seven of these are of moderate size and one of which is an isolated "dwarf continent" like Earth's Australia. With a proportionally larger and more active mantle than Earth and significant tidal forces acting upon it, Fortuna is notably tectonically active, with three of its continents in the process of diverging over the south pole and two colliding in the northern hemisphere.

Ecosystem

Fortuna is the abiogenetic origin point and native home of the Fortunagenia group of organisms, which have spread through the Rigil Kentaurus subsystem via panspermia events. Life on Fortuna is overall smaller in scale than life on its much smaller moon, Concordia, due to the planet's moderately higher gravity. This is a juxtaposition many find startling or even amusing, but is a common trend with life throughout the universe.
