Dragons

Dragons are immensely powerful and magical creatures. They are an ancient race that hail from the First World, with a lifespan greater than almost any other creature in Asylum. There are three main types of dragons in Asylum; chromatic dragons, gem dragons, and metallic dragons. Across the world, the dragons were once the subject of worship and reverence, but the tragedy of the Dragonblood War has disturbed the balance. Now, metallic dragons are all but extinct, the gem dragons hide their true nature, and the chromatic dragons reign unchecked.

A Thousand Kin

Across Asylum, there are dozens of different types of dragons. From the true dragons like Gold, Red and Emerald dragons, to creatures such as Drakes and Wyverns, the draconic family has spread far and wide to take on a variety of forms.

Size & Power

Throughout a dragons life, they transform through many different stages as they age. There are four main stages; wyrmling, young, adult and ancient. The wyrmling stage lasts for 5 years or less, the young stage between 6 and 100 years, the adult stage between 101 and 800 years, and the ancient stage from 800 years to the death of the dragon. Between each stage, a dragon enters what is known as a Dragonsleep, where they cocoon themselves in crystallised energy in order to transform. During the Dragonsleep, a Dragon builds immense levels of magical energies in order to transform their body throughout, which can occasionally cause energy to leak from the cocoon and damage their lair. The Dragonsleep lasts longer depending on the life cycle of the dragon; the Dragonsleep between wyrmling and young lasts around 5 years, young to adult lasts around 50 years, and adult to ancient lasts 100 years.   There is one final stage, however; greatwyrm. Greatwyrms are dragons of immense size and power, but a dragon is not capable of transforming into a greatwyrm on their own. To do so, an ancient dragon must gather and store within themselves immense magical energies beyond most in Asylum - typically done by killing and consuming other dragons. Then, they enter a dragonsleep that lasts 500 years, emerging as one of the most powerful creatures in Asylum. Greatwyrms are extremely rare in Asylum, however, and the only known in Asylum was the Red Dragonlord Ashardalon. The power of a Greatwyrm, however, is not to be abused. By Bahamut, Sardior and Tiamat's will, the power of a Greatwyrm only exists as a means of forestalling the Wyrmsong and the end of all reality.

Scions of the First World

Dragons do not originate from Asylum. They come from a distant, beyond ancient world known only as the First World, for all have forgotten its name. According to legend, it was destroyed by the demons of Torment and consumed, forcing the dragons to flee. And flee they did. The progenitor dragons Bahamut, Sardior and Tiamat took their kin on a great exodus across the multiverse. When they arrived in Asylum, each of the progenitors took to a great Dragonsleep to rest and recover the energy spent in the journey, which would last for a thousand years.   During their Dragonsleep, Bahamut, Sardior and Tiamat each envisioned fragments of a calamity unlike any other. Greater than even that that sundered the First World, they witnessed brief flashes of the end of all life, of every world and creature in the multiverse, each fragmented vision bearing an unholy tune, heinous to their ears. When they awoke, the progenitors set about pooling knowledge of each of these flashes, and deciphered part of a song. While only in pieces, they had each seen the end of the multiverse, and heard fragments of the song that would, presumably, bring it to force. They called this great calamity the Wyrmsong, and began preparations that would last tens of thousands of years, in hopes of forestalling it.

Mortal Gods

Dragons have been revered throughout most of Asylum's history, with the immortal Bahamut, Sardior and Tiamat worshipped as Gods. Mortals have a storied history of giving dragons gifts and food in hopes of gaining their favour, often worshipping powerful dragons in nearby areas. Over the years, the worship of dragons has waned, especially in the wake of the Dragonblood War.   In ancient times, during the War on High, the dragons were called upon to vanquish the invading celestials and demons. Refusing to interfere on the behalf of mortals and their own folly, the dragons refused. But after decades of war and conflict that wrought destruction on all Asylum, the dragons finally intervened. Bahamut, Sardior and Tiamat went to war, driving the invaders back. In one final battle, with the celestial Archangels sealed inside their own weapons, only the demons of Torment remained. In their final push, the progenitor of chromatic dragons, Tiamat the Dragon Queen, was lost, dragged into the depths of Torment, and lost for all eternity.

The Dragonblood War

Miraculously, Tiamat was eventually returned to Asylum through the efforts of a cabal of chromatic dragons, and the nation of Ulhar'Kult. Though she was free from Torment, it was clear that thousands of years in the depths of the mad realm had all but destroyed the Dragon Queen's psyche. She had become aggressive and paranoid, snapping at her kin, and convinced that Bahamut and Sardior had betrayed her. In an effort to reconnect and soothe his sister, Sardior travelled to her lair, bringing a gift of her favourite delicacy. In return, she snapped, lashing out, killing and devouring the Ruby Dragon. This started the Dragonblood War, which would last for over 700 years. Bahamut, intent on preventing Tiamat from doing any further harm - and partially taking revenge for his fallen brother - gathered the metallic dragons and went to war with Tiamat and her chromatic dragons. After hundreds of years of war, with the mortals of Asylum caught between them, the chromatic dragons came out on top, with Tiamat destroying Bahamut as well and decimating the metallic dragon population. However, the chromatic dragons too had their numbers reduced. Now, there is an uneasy tension in the air, as Tiamat has not been seen since the war ended.
