Island of Haven-Fara

The island named Haven-Fara only appeared on very old maps of the region colloquially referred to as the Pirate Isles. Rumors gleamed from notes on such maps suggested that the island was home to a large pirate stronghold, likely the first of its kind, and was used as the seat of power for what would have at that time been the equivalent of the Pirate King (or so scholars believe). Over time the rumors have grown to become larger than life, filling young adventurers hearts with visions of ships whose hulls contain piles upon piles of gold, gems, and other valuables.

Geography

The island is home to a large tropical jungle that stops anywhere from 10 feet to 100 feet from the beach. Just beyond the break of the waves is a reef that surrounds the entirety of the island. Several ships lie beached and torn open on the low reef. Near the center of the island is a large crevasse that is just inches at its narrowest and around 300 feet at the widest gap.

Ecosystem

The island is home to several native species ranging from the common gulls whom feed on the fish of the reef, to the large coconut crabs who inhabit the islands beaches and jungle floor. The island is also home to several uncommon creatures to other islands, like the giant spiders who inhabit the deeper parts of the jungle, and their only predators on the island, the spider eaters - a race of parasitic wasps or bees who have become highly adept at laying eggs inside the paralyzed abdomen of the giant spiders on the island.

Ecosystem Cycles

During the monsoon season when hurricanes are known to plague the area, the wildlife of the island becomes highly territorial. While each creature rarely leaves their respective homes the abnormal spider eaters, with their leathery draconic wings are highly aggressive during this time, finding burrows of giant spiders to paralyze and either devour or ley eggs in during these wet months.

Climate

The tropical island is normally warm with a high humidity. It never frosts on the island allowing yearly plant growth.

History

The history of Haven-Fara is broken and unclear. The most prominent scholar on the subject, Myridin was the first to create a sea worthy map of the area for a thousand years. Before him it was divined that a sea captain and crew of the vessel Fara-til (common: Go on) were the last to confidently know how to navigate to the island.   Back during the age of Dragons the island was a base of some kind, as evident by the ruins beneath that Myridin explored. His notes refer to stone structures beneath a large cave system with walls of salt that winds down under the island beneath the sea to underwater streams and rivers of seawater. These ruins may have once held information on their walls but they are now mostly barren.   Despite the lack of paintings or etchings on the walls, within the center of a 4-way cross-section of ruin is a pillar of a chimera. Sleeping near the pillar one night Myridin discovered that it was indeed a living thing, encased in stone throughout the ages. Communing with the dragon head of the chimera he learned that the structure was a base for creating and manipulating local species within the lost empire. Some of these were like the chimera itself, others were made of metals and gems. Those who worked here were named the Gorgons - not the bull creature of metal who paralyzes - in fact, this creature stole their creators namesake - attributed by this chimera to the fact that they both have paralysis capabilities.   It is unknown to the chimera why the true Gorgon race fell, but he remembers them abandoning the island and eventually being able to roam free with the other creatures, one of these was one of the bull like creatures that he remembers being called "Thesdia Beasts", but why the chimera could not say. Since the beast petrified him with its caustic smelling breath the chimera has been trapped in the hallway. Myridin never freed the chimera, figuring it would try and devour him and his companions once out.   After this the island was discovered by locals from neighboring islands who quickly realized the islands value as a hunting ground, slaying giant spiders for their meat, and cracking their legs open as if they where those of a massive crabs. The islanders did not keep a written history, but an oral one, and those who descended from these original peoples tell stories of how the island would become home to the fiercest and strongest of the islands. And as a result, when the islanders where attacked by the first pirates, they called for their strongest. It was around this time the the warrior chief called the remaining islanders to their island so they could defend them with the creatures of the island who would also defend it against the oncoming pirate storm.   The location of Haven-Fara would be hidden, and raiding parties would be sent to other island in attempts to reclaim them. This nearly worked but in the end the oldest enemies of the islanders, the sea devils now called Triton would manipulate the currents of the islands in a bid to send ships towards the islands direction. It would be many months of this until the captain of the Fara-till would decide to not fight the currents and let them take him where they will. After a week his scout called out, and that morning they landed on the hidden island.   This would be the end of the islanders lifestyle as the pirates would build strongholds and imprison the islanders on the hidden island and stronghold they now called Haven-Fara. The stronghold was build from the original ship that was deconstructed and moved to the center of the island. Upon the time of Myridin's arrival the Fara-till was nothing more than a glorified pirates pub.
