Food Sugaring

Written by orphidor

The Xhiri of the Middle Realm and the Gennuven of the Higher Realm both preserve their food with sugar. Despite the difference in their native environments and even their home Realms, both races share a reason for using sugar in food preservation. Since their bodies require so much energy to function, ingesting sugar on a regular basis grants them adequate amounts of energy to thrive.

Utility

Foods that are commonly preserved with sugar include fruits and berries, which in and of themselves already make up a large portion of Xhiri and Gennuven diets. The Xhiri get their sugar from sugarcane and honey. The Gennuven get it from sugar beets.

Manufacturing

First, the ingredients are dehydrated. The Xhiri accomplish this using the Middle Realm's sun and the Gennuven do it through the warmth of their ovens. After being dryed, the food items are packed in sugar or, in the case of the Xhiri, sealed in honey to be eaten at a later date.

Social Impact

Being high-energy races, partaking in sugar-preserved foods allows both Gennuven and Xhiri alike to remain active and dynamic. Other races often find sugar-preserved foods to be pleasant in moderation, but in higher quantities, the sweetness can become overpowering.
Access & Availability
Though not quite as ubiquitous as other food storage methods, sugar preservation is still common enough to be enjoyed by a majority of Xhiri and Gennuven.
Discovery
Both the Gennuven and the Xhiri have craved sugar since the Age of Balance began. Both peoples independently discovered that sugar preservation was beneficial for multiple reasons by accident.
