Mage's Muzzle

Written by orphidor

Despite being condemned as cruel by many, the mage's muzzle is the only way to reliably neutralize an imprisoned magic user. It's primarily used at the far-southern prison of Bitterpeak and is rarely seen elsewhere. Its wearers are usually Suktu, though it can be shaped to fit the heads of other races.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The muzzle is made of two main components: a half-mask that covers the lower part of the wearer's face and a rod intended to pierce the underside of the wearer's jaw. The rod is thin and slightly curved, with a threaded ball on one end and a small chain on the other. The ball sits beneath the wearer's tongue and the chain connects to the chin portion of the mask. Both the mask and the rod are heavily engraved with magic-annulling enchantments, stripping the arcane forces from any incantations the prisoner speaks, thereby eliminating their ability to cast spells. The enchantments have their roots in symbol magic.   In order to allow the wearer to breathe, the muzzle has vents on either side of the mouth area. The interior of the mask portion is padded to avoid unnecessarily injuring the prisoner. Leather straps and small locks keep the muzzle attached to the head of the person wearing it.

Manufacturing process

The muzzle is forged by a blacksmith before being enchanted and engraved by a specialized mage.

Significance

The reputation surrounding the mage's muzzle is that of fear, both because of the pain it brings and the dangerous nature of those who wear it.
