Twollig Regeneration (TWAH-lig)

Written by orphidor

In the wilderness of Athanya, grievous injuries can be caused by a practically-unlimited variety of means. From attacks by monstrous entities to a fall from a cliffside, broken bones, deep cuts, major burns, and chunks of missing muscle regularly endanger the lives of every intelligent race, including the Twolligs. Luckily for this sturdy folk, they have access to a magical method of healing involving the use of natural materials such as herbs, freshly-cut wood, and clay in order to repair all but the worst of wounds.

Effect

For wounds where flesh is missing, fine clay (carefully strained and cleaned to remove all impurities) is smoothed into the wound to replace muscle and skin alike. In places where bone is missing, healthy wood can be whittled into shape and carefully fitted into the gap. The injury is always primed with clay slip and a warm herbal tonic. Debriding the wound carefully is also an important step.   Though the clay and wood used in this ritual never fully match the rest of a person's body in appearance, once healed, the natural materials become one with the patient to the degree that the areas can feel and even bleed. This is because, over a period of months, blood vessels and nerves branch inward from the edges of the wound to replace what was lost and the wood and clay transmute into something resembling Twollig flesh, bone, and skin.

Side/Secondary Effects

Sometimes the ritual fails if the wound is especially grave. When this happens, the natural components must be removed before they cause the wound to become irritated.

Manifestation

Like other uses of magic, Twollig regeneration rituals create the smell of an incoming storm in the area where they're being used. They're also known to slightly raise the temperature of the surrounding area (which can be rather pleasant in the frigid home climates of the Twolligs.)

Source

The Twolligs have a close magical bond with the the Middle Realm's colder climates. Though this fact does result in them being limited to living in chilly areas, it grants them resiliency against low temperatures and high altitudes, along with allowing them to repair their bodies with natural elements in this fascinating way.
Material Components
Clay, wood, and herbs. The exact mixture of herbs varies depending on which native plants are available, as well as which type of injury the patient has and the healer's own personal preference.

Up to several hours
Applied Restriction
This method of healing cannot replace vital organs or entire missing limbs, and it only works on Twollig bodies. If performed on a patient of any other race, not only will it fail, it will likely put the patient's life at risk.
