Leighlin Penal Colony
A large area comprising of rivers, ponds, lakes, hills, forests and caves.
This area has been worked since the year 974. It is said it contains a vein of iron ore infused with magic.
King Stan Leighlin is keeping this location a secret from anyone but his most trusted men. It is being worked by the criminals of his lands, anyone found guilty of a crime no matter how small has a chance of being sent to work here.
In 985, King Stan Leighlin had several wizards create a magic barrier to prevent anyone from escaping, this barrier would allow someone to enter but would instantly kill anyone trying to leave.
This magic barrier ended up forming much larger than anticipated and the guards and even the wizards themselves ended up becoming prisoners of this barrier. The barrier was changed, the mages were unable to dispel it or affect it in any way at all.
During the confusion, the prisoners took the opportunity and overwhelmed the guards, killing them and taking over the penal colony. The mages were taken prisoner by the criminals and forced to study the barrier to find a way to destroy it or dispel it, which has been fruitless so far.
King Stan Leighlin was forced to negotiate with the prisoners inside the barrier if he wanted a continued supply of ore. A deal was struck, he would supply them with alcohol, food, clothes, iron, anything their hearts desired in exchange for the magic ore. It didn't take long for factions to form inside the barrier;
"The old camp", these are the people that have taken over the old castle which was originally the main hub of the penal colony in the centre of the barrier.
"The new camp", these are the ones that split into their own faction only a few years after the barrier was created, taking up residence in a large cave in the west of the barrier, they didn't agree with the leadership of The old camp and various other issues that have cropped up over the years, they are now more or less enemies with the people of The old camp.
"The swamp camp" these are the people living in the swamp in the east of the barrier. The old camp and The new camp leave these guys alone most of the time as they think the people of The swamp camp have gone insane as they preach about some new strange god called "The Sleeper". They don't really bother anyone and just keep to themselves, smoking their swamp weed and praying to their new found god.
