Sableshire is the de-facto military capital of Auvia. It is the site of the
the Imperial Collegiate Military School.
History:
One of the oldest settlements on the continent, it is believed that the history of the settlement known as Sableshire dates back to the
Age of Blood, when the first proto-
Halflings created some of the world's first societies. Much of it's ancient structure is submerged stonework, not dissimilar to some dwarven outposts, yet dating back even farther than the oldest known holds.
By the time of it's resettlement during the Helleynan expansion, it had been long abandoned. It's deep tunnels and stone foundations made for one of the regions better settlement locations, however, and it was repopulated and given over to the men and women who would eventually become House Fortuna.
An unassuming ruin under the stewardship of a minor noble house would soon become incredibly prevalent in Auvian history, as it would soon serve House Fortuna very well during the
goblin invasion known as the
War of the Khan. By some miracle of fate or unknown magical effect, Sableshire was completely overlooked by invading goblinoid forces, no matter how hard they searched the surrounding area for it. This incredible (or likely magical) twist of fate allowed Countess Isabelle Fortuna to rally a resistance under her banner, and later stage their counter offensive from their hidden halls, alongside their coalition allies from
Old Aethra and
Feywood.
After the war's conclusion, House Fortuna was uplifted with the crowning of
Empress Isabelle Fortuna I as the first
Empress of Auvia. With the house's move to their new seat in the newly minted
Fortuna City, Sableshire was repurposed into the new nations military headquarters.
Locations of Note:
The Imperial Collegiate Military School - While the headquarters of the Imperial College reside in Fortuna City, the vast majority of the nation's military training is completed here. It maintains the largest military encampment on the continent, eclipsing both the standing armies at Iron Hills or Rimegarden.
