Riddemarsh

Riddemarsh is an Anglican settlement of western humans, located on the southwestern ridge of Edea. It sprung up through a collection of chiefdoms and dynasties across the region, which grew and allied together during the war of men to create a single state. As one of the two military hard points of the kingdom, the fortified and highly defended towns and cities of Riddemarsh lend to its highly ordered and hierarchical culture and clearly defined classes.

Government

The government of Riddemarsh sits in the state capital of Port Bahyrst, ruled by Lord Archduke Arthur Wright and his Astrium Advisor Tobin Eneth. 
The highest office of Riddemarsh oversees the work of four local jurisdictions, Roan, Upra, Vesta and Maleah. These local bodies organise the meeting of Barons and Earls to discuss government business of taxation, regulation and infrastructure, which the head office approves. The government of Bahyrst also oversees defence and trade policy with other regions of the kingdom and abroad.

Industry & Trade

Riddemarsh is home to vast fields, plains and prairies spanning across the west of the state, covering most of the land in Roan and Upra. Vast swafts of this land is made up of farmland, grazing fields and orchards, where masses of grains, fruits and vegetables are grown to be shipped across the kingdom, such as rich wheat and barley, or fresh apples. Livestock keepers also supply meat and a range of dairy supplies.
Along the coastal towns and cities, fishing communities are also present and a lively contribution to the Riddemarsh economy, supplying carp, trout and pike from the western ocean, and cod and salmon breeds from the many rivers and streams leading down from the wintercrest into the nearby forests.
The many port towns of Upra are also home to vineyards of rich grapes and berries. The unpredictable weather and volatile winds have led to an expert skill in cultivating these crops, rewarded with delightful champagnes and wines which are shipped across the country for high prices.   Riddemarsh's history of conflict and frequent sieges have also led to it evolving an expert craft of weaponry, armour and defensive architecture, and provides much of the training and resources to the Grand Crown Army. Horses reared for war are raised on hearty Riddemarshian fodder, and smiths and smelters spanning full streets in the largest cities supply their crafts directly to the Crown for a healthy price.

Infrastructure

Extensive port facilities and high quantities of trade which finds its way through Riddemarsh has led to it developing key infrastructure for the kingdom. Ports along the west and south coast bring in thousands of tonnes of goods from overseas every year, and dockyards with wet and dry docks allow for the harbouring, repair and construction of the Kingdom's finest vessels. Roads and bridges are well maintained to move goods from the coastal cities inland, and for long haul travel through the kingdom. Inns, taverns, lodgings and stables are commonplace through the region to assist the tourists and merchants who travel between cities and towns.

Guilds and Factions

The presence of many forts and well guarded port cities has led to a large influence of the Crowns guard in the region, having some of the strongest defensive and domestic units. Part of daily life, the many citizens of Riddemarsh interface regularly with the Crowns guard, providing goods and services to keep them strong. This has bolstered the forgers and workers guilds of Riddemarsh, who have established well connected guilds across the state, allowing them to lobby and pool funds to purchase security and escort.

History

The state of Riddemarsh was formed in 412AT after the infighting between a range of warlords led to the region being ruled by a single dynastic state. The arms races and strengthening of the state's power led to it being resistant to any takeover by the growing kingdom to the east, and stayed that way for over 300 years until an emboldened kingdom tore west under the rule of Emperor Esalius. Since the integration of Riddemarsh under the kingdom's rule, Riddemarsh has become a Jewel in Edea's crown, providing the strongest military resources and protection of the state to fulfil the stated goal of the Astrium to maintain peace amongst men.
