Sanguine

Sanguine is a state territory in the north-east of the Kingdom of Edea. As the youngest human state on the continent, the culture of sanguine is highly diverse, with influences from the southern Germanic culture of Eskia and the Anglican Whitecherish. The recent expansion to the north has also largely increased the halfling and half dwarf demographics in the state.   The racial makeup of sanguine is approximately 65% human, 30% halfling, 10% half-dwarf and 5% half-elf.  

Government

The governing body of Sanguine resides in its state capital of Moadbright‌, led by the Lord Archduke Tobias Selner and his Astrium adviser Artimus Springweaver.   The council of Sanguine oversees most state affairs, particularly following the nationalisation of the mining industry in in the 1550s. Under Lord Archduke Selner sits minsters for taxation, agriculture, trade, mining, and infrastructure, as well as Archdukes who report the activities of Earls and Barons. Cardinals of the sanguine domestic and defensive guard also sits on the council, advising on military matters and the organisation of the presence of guards within the state.  

History

The state of Sanguine was formed in the year 1502AT after a series of insurrection events and the formation of a separatist parliament in the city of Lerwick rocked the longstanding stability of the Kingdom between 1487 and 1500. These events were sparked by the separatist movement The Black Axe, who had rallied the support of miners and refinery workers disillusioned with not receiving a fair share of their produce after it was shipped to the rest of Eskia and beyond. Concerned with the potential re-ignition of a war, the Astrium came together and agreed the Sanguine Treaty in January 1501 with representatives of the movement, creating new borders between Whitecherish and Eskia to create the new state.  

Infrastructure

The majority of Sanguinese infrastructure is built around the transportation of mined goods and forestry from the Thallenlark mines and various orchards and forests to forges and workshops across the state. Heavy duty roadways and well kept carts take goods to and from settlements, allowing for large levels of trade and commerce and the fuelling of industry. Some seaborne commerce is found to the north of the gulf of Sanguine, though much of the vessels which charter from the ports of Chaskia and Eastborough are expeditionary in nature, leaving most travel to be by road. One Skyship port is found in the city of Lerwick, which sees lots of through-travel between sanguine, Yt'zel and Eskia.  

Industry and Trade

The two major industries in Sanguine are forestry and mining. Rich minerals beneath the earth are dug in huge quarries through mining by hand and arcane quarrying. Large quantities of Iron, Coal and Silver are found in these mines, the largest of which is Thallenlark, a valley devoted uniquely to the craft. Orchards and lumbermills are also found in towns and cites along the edges of the large, dense forests Sanguine has to offer, producing fruits, nuts and wood which is shipped within the boarders and abroad. Almost all villages also have farmlands, paddocks and mills, feeding the citizens of Sanguine. The agricultural ministry conducts regular assessments alongside the taxation ministry to ensure settlements receive adequate funding to expand farmland to feed populations as they grow.   Trade between the settlements of Sanguine, between Sanguine and the rest of the Kingdom, and to entities outside the kingdom is commonplace. Goods are often brought across the borders of Sanguine from the Wintercrest dominion, trading gems, stone and weapons for food and wood. Other states in the Kingdom also buy the particular woods and fruits of Sanguine for the oceanic and temperate goods from the south, as well as produce from the hectares of farmland from whitecherish.  

Guilds and Factions

The largest faction aside from the state in Sanguine is the mining guild, a collection of businesses and unions operating in the mines and forges across the state. These are a powerful central force which owns and tolls most trade routes in and out of Sanguine, as well as the majority of mines and quarries in the state. Forgers guilds are frequent throughout the Sanguinese cities and towns, providing arms and defences for the army and individuals. The merchant guild, which operates throughout the kingdom, also spars with the mining guild of Sanguine for control over trade routes and roads, as well as for contracts with major businesses in the cities. Beneath the law of the state, thieves guilds operate quietly in the shadows, profiting off loopholes and bureaucracy through theft and blackmail.
