Bennet Dunlap

Rift of the Snow Queen

Bennet Dunlap is a cold, calculating individual that, after having his emotions forcefully torn from him, had desired nothing more than making himself whole again.

History

Some forty-odd years ago, Bennet was a boisterous, young man, the third son to a family that had worked the mines of Four Pines for generations. Seemingly always out to prove something, Bennet believed that merely succeeding at a task wasn't enough - everyone had to see it, even if doing so would be unnecessary or dangerous. So, when the opportunity arose for him to face the Wendigo, Bennet immediately volunteered.   Unlike those that had faced the Wendigo before, Bennet had a plan. He learned about the origins of the creature from the local tribes and crafted his own idol that would protect him from the beast, rather than merely draw it to him. He knew he could defeat this creature, and then the town would see him for what he was - a hero.   His plan worked, to an extent. The Wendigo didn't kill him. Instead, it drew all the warmth from his body, leaving him a cold, shivering shell of a man. He withdrew from society, living alone in a house whose shades were always drawn, its insides like a well-sealed tomb.   Some years later, Bennet was visited by Lea Fischer, a young girl that had volunteered to take the Walk and face the Wendigo. He reluctantly told her what he knew, and gave her a charm much like the one he used to protect himself all those years ago.

Meeting the Crew

During their investigations into the Wendigo, the crew confronted Bennet about his history with the creature. Unfortunately, at the time, Bennet was not interested in talking and drove the crew away.   Feeling that the old man was hiding something, Peter O'Sullivan broke into Bennet's home and learn more about him. The others arrived on the scene in time to learn of Peter's plan, with Declan L'Estrange attempting to mislead Bennet, but instead mistakenly opened a door to the spirit realm. Bennet then rushed through this door, not realising that it did not lead to his home. The moment he entered, the doorway closed, leaving the crew wondering just where Bennet had gone.

The Realm of Ice

The door had taken Bennet to a cold, harsh and inhospitable realm. He wandered for what seemed like an eternity before he came across a small group of tribal hunters. Thanks to his unusual skin colour and attire, they mistook him for some kind of spirit and presented offerings to him. Due to his time learning from the local tribe in his youth, he found that, to his surprise, he understood fragments of the proto-language these hunters were using.   It was then that Bennet realised that he'd somehow been sent back to a time well before the founding of Four Pines. This revelation, combined with his delirious, food-starved state, caused him to violently attack and kill the hunters. Then, starving and with nothing else to eat, Bennet ate the flesh of the hunters.   At the moment he swallowed his first bite of flesh, Bennet suddenly felt his very being ripped in two. His emotions were ripped from him, leaving him only his cold, calculating intellect. Meanwhile, his bestial, base desires and passions became the monstrous Wendigo, the very same beast that would torment his town in years to come.

The Second Encounter

Bennet lived like this for centuries, his condition leaving him unaffected by the passage of time. During this time, he plotted to restore himself and get his revenge against those that had wronged him.   He would eventually get his chance when he encountered the crew a second time, kidnapping Peter in an attempt to use her both as bait for the Wendigo, and as a sacrifice for the ritual that would restore him. Unfortunately, the rest of the crew thwarted his plans and destroyed the Wendigo while Peter, now blessed with the power of the Moon Goddess, defeated him.   Bennet escaped the confrontation and stole Peter's blade, Fragarach, in the process.
