Lashawn Markus Nelson

Lashawn Markus Nelson (a.k.a. Anita Rita Booke)

Lashawn is the foster brother of Jolene Williams. His parents were her God parents, and had thus agreed to care for her if anything happened to the Williams'. When Jolene's parents died in a house fire, that is exactly what happened. Fortunately, Lashawn and Jolene had already been friends. First in Sunday School, and then in actual school.

Mental Trauma

On the day he graduated with his Bachelor's degree, instead of his parents attending, they mailed him a check for $25,000 US. Included in the envelope were a series of newspaper clippings from the Indianapolis Star about his own death. Finally, there was a brief, terse note explaining that they had claimed a John Doe from the morgue, and provided false identification to have Lashawn declared dead.

He could keep his name, birthday, and social number; but any and all connection to his family of birth had been gunned down in a dispute outside of a club on Indianapolis' near west side.

Social

Religious Views

Scathing atheist.

It was due to his parents' evangelical Christian views that they looked on his queerness -- both as a gay man and as a drag queen -- as an abomination. This led to poor parenting choices that resulted in a great deal of emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical trauma.

A true god does not need conversion. A true god does not need prostelitzation. A true god does not need tithing. A true god does not hate. A true god does not exist; not in America, not to Christians.
— Lashawn's private diary; June 19, 2016.

Hobbies & Pets

Lashawn collects two things: books and succulents. His entire dining room is dedicated not to dining, but to crafting equisite outfits for his performance nights at the Double Header, a local gay and lesbian bar. In addition, he shares his small home with a pair of scottish terriers, Poirot and Marple.
