Emergency Dimensional Pocket Failsafe Drive (EDPFD)
Overview: Emergency Dimensional Pocket Failsafe Drives are devices mounted inside many Saurian void ships nationwide and beyond. These drives stay totally inactive until the host ship sustains critical damage, enough that the vessel almost certainly will explode or be otherwise obliterated in the immediate future. As soon as the device's internal computer senses such an event a chain reaction is triggered in the ships reactor, causing it to overload and detonate almost instantly. This creates such an influx of raw energy that the drive is able to harness it, siphoning off enough power to create a miniature pocket dimension where the dying ship is tucked away. Time in this brand new dimension is nearly frozen, hopefully giving a rescue team time enough to arrive, enter the dimension, and extract the personnel before they are consumed by the explosion. An added bonus is that the ship is utterly destroyed in this reaction, ensuring that no technology falls into enemy hands. Special equipment designed to tear a rift into such pocket dimensions is required for rescue workers to enter and do there job, and thus many Saurian medical and rescue vessels are equipped with at least on such complementary device.
Appearance: The core of the drive itself seems to be a brilliant ball of crystallized fire, with mirror-like crystals slowly extending out in every direction from it as the drive strains to sustain the dimeshinal pocket around its host ship. At the moment of activation, it appears to observers that the dying ship ripples, folds in on itself, and then totally disappears in less than a second. Inside the new dimension, time runs far more slowly, the roughly 5 seconds of time the ship is inside stretching to around 5 hours (more advanced or high end drives have suspension times of up to several days. Typically presidential or important politicians' ships are equipped with these). When rescue personnel arrive and cut their way into the space, they still move at regular speed. This makes it seem as if the original ship and its crew are moving in super slow motion, rescue teams using jet packs and grappling hooks to skillfully maneuver through the detonating ship to hopeufully extract everyone onboard. It should be noted that the initial explosion that triggers the dimensional pocket is not small and often times people meet their demise by way of all consuming plasma weather or not a rescue team arrives on scene.
Social Impact
These devices have proven to be so valuable and adept at saving lives that any Saurian Empire with a crew/passenger compliment of over 1,000 souls is required by law to have on installed. The Atalanti Republic is also currently looking into implementing similar legislation.
Access & Availability
EDPFDs are so technologically advanced and difficult to manufacture and maintain that the Saurian Empire and Atalanti Republic are the only nations to have access to them.
