Atalanti Republic (At-uh-lan-tee)

Culture: Republic/Technocracy The Atalanti Republic is one of the newest civilizations in the Avendora Galaxy. Interestingly, they are also extremely advanced, second only to the Saurians. The Atalanti also have very similar moral standards to the Saurian Empire, leading to the Saurians quickly offering them protection from their dangerous and hostile neighbors. After much political debate, (the Saurians wanted the Atalantis (at-uh-lan-tees) to be come a vassal and the Atalantis were not too happy about this at first), the Atalanti Republic finally agreed when they realized the threat they were under from the Walren and other predatory empires. Unfortunately, the Walren Empire had already set its sights on their capitol, Atalan, which is extremely rich in resources. They declared war on the Atalantis without much thought, wrongly assuming their current allies, the Saurians, would not come to their target’s aid. Due to a complex web of mutual protection and war agreements, this started a massive war, empires across the galaxy getting involved, though not wanting to tear Avendora apart, only fighting in Atalanti territory. Finally after over a hundred years (not too long for galactic wars) the Walren finally sued for peace after only managing to take and hold a few planets when Saurian war fleet Hammerfall launched a surprise attack on Sybr, the Walren Empires most highly valued yet relatively weak protectorate. Since this war, the Atalanti Republic has finally managed to build back to its original power, minus a few systems. Technology: While Atalanti technology is very advanced, their weaponry and ships do not demonstrate as well as one would think. This is due to their peace striving nature, most resources being devoted to more societal and environmental technologies. Notably, much of their technology relies on water, from generators to weapons firing plasma heated water.

Culture

The Atalantis pride themselves on their democracy; in their eyes theirs is the fairest and most socially advanced society. Every level of Atalanti leadership is elected by a majority vote of the caste below them, with the lowest level of leadership (city mayors) being elected directly by the people themselves. In addition the Atalanti republic has many conservation programs to protect the indigenous flora and fauna on their worlds, making them pretty much the only other major nation besides the Saurian Empire to enact such wide sweeping policies. In an attempt to avoid hive mind-like tendencies devolved by large amounts of population living in close proximity, the Atalanti government has instituted various programs to incentivize the population spreading out more evenly over the surface of their planets (this is made easier by Atalantis not being limited by having to live on exclusively land or water). Atalanti civilians are also rewarded for moving to newer more recently terraformed planets, which allows for colonies to grow in size much more rapidly.

Foreign Relations

When the Atalanti Republic was a much newer nation they placed a great emphasis on diplomacy with foreign nations, their curiosity about the many wonders of Avendora they were being exposed to driving them. Quickly they began to realize the cruel realities of the galaxy, and were forced even further into their shell after they were attacked by the Walren unprovoked in the War For Atalan. After the terrible war they moved to a strictly non-interventionist foreign policy. Only in recent times have they begun to supply foreign aid and similar assistance to other nations, and are even apparently close to getting involved directly to help in ending the Barupo Genocide.
