Blood Guard

Easily the most elite of the Poliran military units is the so-called Blood Guard of the Sanguine Tower. No one remembers what the detachment used to be called when it was first formed, as it has been known by its nickname for so long. It is both the most prestigious and most dangerous assignment a Poliran soldier could have.
The Blood Guard's primary mandate is two-fold: protect Sanguine Tower casters from outside threats, like mobs, and ensure that the casters remain within the protective custody of the Sanguine Tower. Their secondary tasks often involve bringing in rogue casters. Officially, this is the job of Tower casters, but in the field, any member of the Sanguine Tower contingent could find themselves involved. Turnover is not as high as one might expect, as escape attempts are rare and often badly organized. When an opening is available, competition is fierce.
The Blood Guard is a fully voluntary assignment. Only those who apply to the position can be chosen, and only members of the Royal Guard can apply. The high status and pay benefits ensure that there are always more applicants. These would-be recruits go through vigorous testing, including dealing with live magical fire from Tower casters, before the selection process is through. Selected candidates must then go through six months of additional training in counter-magic techniques, and in the use of the Ortesian Shield. This rounded, pale-green shield of hardened Ortesian Porcelain is invaluable in deflecting and absorbing magical attacks, and one of the most recognizable parts of the Blood Guard's kit, apart from their blood-red uniforms.
Although the Blood Guard is part of the Poyal Guard, and as such, is fealty-bound to the Crown, recruits are required to make a second oath of fealty to the throne upon completing their training. Sanguine Tower casters are among the Kingdom's most precious assets, and only the most trustworthy may guard and protect them.
