Caster's Brew
Many attempts at home-brewed remedies for the Shards of Zolgar, or "The Pains", exist. They are scattered through hidden grimoires or passed on through word of mouth. One of the most famous, or perhaps infamous, is the Caster's Brew.
Unlike most of these spurious treatments, Caster's Brew is not purported to be a total cure for the debiliatating symptoms of magic casting. It is said that this potion is only effective against the more acute, early-stage symptoms - intense nausea, blinding headaches, and the sharp pains that give the Shards of Zolgar its name.
Multiple variations of the legend exist, each with its own list of dubious ingredients. Additionally, these recipes rarely have quantities attached, giving them even less credibility. The common thread is that all of them seem to require Mossycup Thyme and Blooming Astridia. Apart from that, the instructions can vary quite wildly. The one printed in Latimer's Grimoire of Adjustment, possibly the most well-known instance of a Caster's Brew recipe, suggests the addition of Yellow Birch bark, Ghost Moss, and the caster's own urine, boiled together for 24 hours under a dark moon.
Other variations insist on a full moon, some say fresh spring water from the source, and cooking times can vary from a full day to ten minutes or less. Some other plants associated with the Brew include Black Oak bark, Queen's Mint, or Green Yarrow. Possibly the most dangerous variation insists on the addition of Sweet Foxglove, a deadly poison if too much is consumed. A caster attempting to avoid the Pains would be far safer in joining the Sanguine Tower and getting the actual treatment of ground Aspium in wine.
