Ochre River

The Ochre River is a major river in Burland, the Kingdom of the North. The river runs from King Dunain's Crags at the base of the Goldenrod Mountains, flowing westward through central Burland to the Stoney Marshes and the North Sea.   To the south of this great river is the capital, Bhaile-Burmòr, and the Leys Forest. To the north is the wide-ranging Burmen Plains region.

Description

The river is named for the yellow or orange color hue of the water, which is from the natural clay pigments carried from the river's source.   The river is wide and generally deep, though it does not flow particularly quickly, which allows for ferrys to easily cross.

History

The Fourth Age: The Age of Shadow
A major crossing over the Ochre River, a stone bridge with rotary towers, was destroyed by gnolls during the Manslayer War in 4A 995.   In 4A 995, the Zenethian Children and Gruknock, Captain of Burland, crossed the river northwards through an underground smuggling tunnel. Later in 4A 995, they crossed back southwards via ferry.
The Fifth Age: The Age of Beginnings
In 5A 025, a new river crossing, Brigitte Bridge, was completed. A settlement would grow around the crossing.
