Sleep is where we regain our sanity. It should be no surprise then, that to forego rest is to depart from reality as we collectively understand it.
History
Long enough ago that the story may have slipped from public knowledge, Madam Kairi took a risk. After discussing with her confidant and partner Violet Blackwell, the two decided on a bolder approach to this years education at the College of Iago.
Accepting an even smaller group than usual, Madam Kairi admitted only six students into her college. They were an unremarkable bunch, unfocused or with limited abilities at best. All but Azazel, an experienced swordsman with a decorated career, seemed to be regular folk.
There was public outcry, and plenty of outrage as proud mothers and fathers watch their talented guards in the making be sent home. Pupils of great talent and promise were turned away whilst these nobodies marched merrily into the catacombs.
They knew the risks. Kairi hadn't lied to them. It would be the most dangerous year yet.
With a nod from her Mistress, Violet began the spell in secret. A simple thing to cast and thankfully so, as she would have to hold her concentration, casting an unbroken spell for the following three years. The effect was simple: sleep would not come.
