Session 3 - New friends
General Summary
The party woke in the Burgomaster’s Mansion and decided to bring the body of Kolyan Indirovich to the Church for a burial rites (alongside Bran's remains).
On the way, a thuggish man and his scrawnier accomplice bumped the procession and knocked the coffin to the ground. As part of this, some fabric was torn from Dalo's clothing. At that point the 2 bolted! The chase was on! The party met Vvn, a gnome who had hidden out in a home of Village of Barovia Home and was desperate for a way out. Gariont almost met his death when given chase, only to be saved from death. Artem (who had been watching the party while in raven form) changed to his normal Tiefling form and entered combat only to once again fly away before the party noticed his presence.
At the church, the party met Donavich, a priest whose mind was all but gone. From downstairs could be heard the pleading voice of his sun Doru,who had been turned to vampire spawn and was pleading for food from his father. The party agreed to help Donavich. He led them all to the trapdoor and from there, Dalo stepped forward into the darkness first. He heard the vampire spawn creeping forward while saying he could smell his blood. In a panic, Dalo triggered a divine spell immediately. Unfortunately, Doru was just out of range and combat began. The party were almost wiped out after taking several life draining and necrotic based attacks. Doru would have feasted on the corpse of Dalo had it not been for the interventions of Donavich , Ismark Kolyanovich and Ireena Kolyana . In the end, they prevailed, but it was close. Ireena was also in very poor shape before the fight was done.
A rest was taken. Afterwards, everyone went to the graveyard for the last rites of Doru , Kolyan Indrovich and Bran. After hours of grave digging and filling, night had fallen. The spirits of the dead rose around the party and silently marched off out of the village. Many more spirits rose than there were headstones. The spirits were human, tiefling, orcish, gnomish... all races were represented. They were adventurers. Brother Donavich explained that this happens every night. The souls of those who defy Strahd are bound to this place and made to walk to his castle each night and throw themselves from the highest tower. As the last spirits left, the party saw Bran's spirit rise. He looked confused but fell into step with the others. He could not be interacted with and was not responsive.
The party slept in the crypt that night. It had held the vampire spawn at bay and the thought was that it would also hold away the attacks from Strahd. Ireena Kolyana and Ismark Kolyanovich stayed up top on the other side of the trap door. The night was uneventful. In the morning, some shopping was done at Bildrath’s Mercantile before the party decided to travel out of The Village of Barovia towards Valaki, where Ismark believes that Ireena will be safer. On the way there, the plan was to visit a Vistani camp to meet with Madam Eva, someone who seems to know things about the past of the party members. She may be able to help them find their way in Barovia.
A short distance out of town, the Ivlis River was crossed at a stone bridge. It's waters were slow and crystal clear. Soon thereafter the party encountered a skeletal rider and horse. The riders eye had a faint red glow and it held aloft a lantern which gave no light. Everyone hid and made no move as it passed. Artem took to the air and confirmed that the entity was alone. They continued along the Old Svalich Road to the West until they reached the River Ivlis Crossroads . The frayed length of rope dances from a hangmans beam here. A small overgrown graveyard is present as is a sign pointing to 3 locations: Barovia Village to the east, Tser Pool to the northwest, and Ravenloft/Vallaki to the southwest.
