Strahd von Zarovich was previously the Count of Barovia but is now a vampire and a wizard. He can be encountered almost anywhere in the Domain of Dread, from a misty and sodden roadside to the catacombs of CASTLE RAVENLOFT. Barovia is his.

HISTORY OF A VAMPIRE

In life, Strahd was much a different being; a count, a soldier, a conqueror, a brother and a son.
After the death of his father, KING BAROV, he waged long and successful wars in his family's name, vanquishing enemies and taking their lands. Slaying the last of his enemies in a remote mountain valley, Strahd was struck by the areas beauty and named in Barovia in honour of his father.
His mother, QUEEN RAVENOVIA, however, began to fear the cold and bloody man that Strahd had turned into following his many battles and conquests. She was determined to protect her other son, SERGEI VON ZAROVICH, and kept him away from the newly founded land of Barovia.
