Strahd Von Zarovich

(a.k.a. The Dread Lord, The Count, The Hooded Figure)

The Vampire Lord, master of Castle Ravenloft, and ruler of Barovia. Strahd Von Zarovich is a powerful, mysterious, and widely feared figure. An ancient conqueror, he seeks the love of the spirit of a woman named Tatyana, who currently exists as Ireena Kolyana. Whether looking over his valley from the high turret of his mighty castle, riding into battle on his flaming steed Bucephalus, or lurking in the shadows, he dominates Barovia with masterful cunning, force, and precision.

History with the Vistani

According to Stanimir, Strahd and the Vistani have a long history and an amicable relationship. Strahd's life was once saved by Vistani when he rode into their camp, injured. As repayment, he spared them from his conquest.
Stanimir regarded Strahd as "his prince," and desired to use the party as a means to turn him from his cruel ways, truly believing him to be a good person. The Eastern Vistani at the Tser Pool also greatly respect and admire Strahd. The held a small bonfire feast when the thought he was coming to visit, as he apparently occasionally does. Many were disappointed to only find Rahadin in his place.
However, the Vistani are not immune to Strahd's vengeance. In retribution for Stanimir's actions and intentions, Strahd slaughtered members of the Western Vistani camp, including Stanimir's son Ratka, and Stanimir himself.

Ireena

Ireena is the current incarnation of the woman Strahd loves, Tatyana. Her soul, like all others in Barovia, is unable to pass on and leave the valley, resulting in a form of reincarnation. Strahd has saved Ireena at least twice in her life, and Ireena feels some sort bond with him, though she does not fully understand what or who she is. In order to win the favor of this incarnation, he took advantage of Ireena's adventurous and trusting nature as well as her hatred of Barovia. He framed her for the murder of Fiona Wachter and used the doubts of her new adventuring party friends to turn the town of Vallaki and the party against her. Though it seems he realistically could have taken Ireena by force at any time, he for some reason seems to have exercised restraint, feeling it important to manipulate her emotions first. Nevertheless, he was successful in abducting Ireena from St. Andral's Church, the very place where she was supposed to be safest.

Known Abilities

Strahd has been shown to have control over creatures of the night, including bats and wolves. As a full vampire, he naturally possesses superhuman speed, strength, and regeneration.
His animated sword was able to kill Marge Wormfinger of The Wormfinger Family in a single blow, and he was able to summon lightning from the sky to severely wound her mother, Morgantha Wormfinger.
The full extent of Strahd's power remains untested and unknown. You would be wise to fear him.
