Alexander Prynne
Alexander Prynne was fourteen years old when he was admitted to Slatefall hospital. He had developed a mild infection and began to run a fever. His father, Thomas Prynne took him to the hospital for treatment. Everything was going fine, until one of the nurses mentioned to Dr. Crane that Alexander was a savant. He was brilliant with Mathematics.
Dr. Crane was fascinated, couldn't rest until he had run some tests, and altered the boy's charts so that he would be moved to the psych ward. After a few days, the staff began asking questions. The boy's father wanted updates on his progress. Dr. Crane couldn't run the risk of being discovered. He moved the boy to his private lab at his home, and wrote in his report that the infection was too severe and the boy perished. It was still too suspicious, and the boy's father persisted to ask questions. He came to the hospital continuously, until he was forcibly removed.
At the doctor's house, Alexander was given a room, and run through some simple tests. Alexander did amazingly well at calculations and mathematics far advanced for a child his age, but once any stressors were introduced, he would have a tantrum and shut down emotionally. He didn't like to be touched, didn't like to be interrupted when calculating, was afraid of the dark and hated loud noises. Any time one of his particular quirks would rear it's head, Alexander would begin to shriek or bang on the walls. He would frequently call out for his father and once a full-fledged tantrum had begun, the test would have to be postponed.
Alexander was causing a particular fuss one day, and caught the attention of Frank Gillespie who was working in another room. Frank had half a mind to scold the boy, but when he walked in, he heard his plaintive cries to be returned to his father. Frank had a soft spot for children, so he sat on the floor and waited for Alexander to calm down. Once he had, Frank just said, "wear yourself out, did you? Poor fella, let's get him some warm milk for that throat. Must have screamed yourself hoarse by now." Alexander was taken aback. He had never seen this man before, and hadn't heard him come in. He stood for a moment, wiped the tears from his face, then proceeded to follow him out the door and to the kitchen. Warm milk sounded like a good idea.
After that, Alexander and Frank were fast friends. Frank made sure Alexander didn't get into too much trouble, and made the days a little more bearable. If Alexander was having a rough day and would listen to no one else, he would listen to Frank. Alexander was a bright spot in the dreary existence for Frank. Keeping him safe became his mission above all others.
