Bessie

Bessie was hired by Lydia Van Allen as the midwife and housekeeper for the Van Allen household. She was the wife of Henry, and was soon an irreplaceable part of the family. Bessie helped with the children and the day to day work that needed to be done in the house. Bessie was strict, organized, but affectionate and kind. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and would often make the children laugh despite their struggles. Bessie was also a great friend to Edith Van Allen, Charles' mother. She and Lydia cared for the elderly woman in her declining health.
