DataKrash
On June 3rd, 2022, Rache Bartmoss triggered DataKrash as his R.A.B.I.D.s virus spread across the NET. The groundwork had already been laid in 2014 when Bartmoss released the Ihara-Grupp Transformation Algorithm that secretly implemented itself into the basic transfer protocols used. This meant that when the trigger was finally pulled, nearly 80% of all data was corrupted within just months and more would soon follow. The DataKrash is almost entierly responsible for the destruction of the old NET.
The intent had been to destroy corporate hold on information and take town their chances to oppress the people. In reality, the DataKrash might have achieved the exact opposite. Regular people lost any use of net access during the 20s and part of the 30s. Corporations that needed data storage resorted to punchcards, making their job clunky but possible. The truly wealthy megacorps created insular networks with a lot of protection to allow them to reap the benefits without involving the public. CitiNets changed some of this, but a new NET didn't come about until NetWatch established the Blackwall.
The DataKrash is presumably still part of the systems beyond the Blackwall. The fact that the AIs there have evolved to deal with it should worry any Netrunner even remotely interested in the concepts.
