Old City district
You can still see some of the old buildings in certain parts of town, and they have done a good job of restoring them where possible. The memorial in the centre of the district is carved from a slab of stone from the old castle.
Born from ruins
The Old City district of Salike is the living, breathing heart of the city. It is the largest district and the oldest district: being the site upon which the old city of Dyopat stood. Now a bustling commercial and residential district, it was once the second largest city of the old Human empire. Large sections of the old city were destroyed during The Great Quake and many thousand lost their lives. The influx of people from the mountain and coastal regions after the Quake were instrumental in the rebuilding of the city, and later expanding it into the vast city that stands here now.Destruction
Dyopat stood to the north of the confluence of the two rivers and was a city of twenty thousand souls. More than two thirds of those souls were killed during the earthquakes that shook the city; most were burried under rubble, some caught in fires that broke out, and some drowned due to massive waves rushing down river. Many of the buildings were destroyed and those that remained standing suffered damage of varying degrees.Forging ties
When the Nysadans arrived, two weeks after the Quake, people were still in varying degrees of shock and mourning. The survivors were living in the buildings that had sustained the least damge and were still scouring the city for survivors, though after this much time they weren't holding out much hope. The new arrivals brought hope back to the survivors, and over the course of the next couple of months more and more refugees flocked to the city. Soon serious rebuilding efforts were taking place, and the farmlands were put back into use.

Dyopat had been a Human city, but the majority of those who fled there after the Great Quake were Gnomes from the mountains and Elves from the jungles. Although these cultures were not at war with each other they were not without their political and religious tensions, and there were some initial clashings. However, they quickly realised they needed each other in order to rebuild and continue on with their lives, so they worked to overcome these differences. These days it is almost impossible to tell which race most native Salikans are, they have mixed so much over the last four hundred years.
