Gods & Religion
The gods of Caelvoran source their divine power from faith and worship. Their agents can be found in shrines and temples throughout the world, their power manifested in the clerics and paladins of their name. The so-called evil gods, though they tend to have fewer followers, make up for the lack of worshipers with a more intense form of worship—sacrifice.
Ages ago the gods walked the material plane. Their petty squabbles raised and destroyed continents. The wars they waged wrought havoc for the mortals they used as pawns in their eternal games of power and intrigue. The deities jealously guarded their portfolios during this time, for there were many of them beyond measure. All that changed with the arrival of the Wretched.
The Wretched struck fear into the hearts of even the gods.
Forced to band together for their very survival, let alone that of the mortals on the Prime Material, the Divine fought back. As in any war, there were casualties. In the end, merely a handful of gods stood where once there were multitudes. But they stood triumphant. Thus ended the First Era.
For a time, there was peace. The remaining gods worked together to restore Caelvoran to what it once was. However, monstrosities and abominations, created as weapons against the Wretched, still roamed wild. Disagreements sprang forth over which creations ought be permitted to endure. Gods who had once served as spies and generals in the previous conflict were accused of bloodlust, lacking scruples, and worse. These, in turn, cursed their accusers as narrow-minded and short-sighted.
The fracturing of the pantheon ushered in the Third Era. The remaining deities recognized the threat of the Wretched. They could not afford more losses, yet collaboration was no longer an option. A détente was reached. The Rift saw the gods retreat from Caelvoran. They would no longer intervene directly on the material plane, but instead would observe from the outer realms and keep watch for the return of their ancient enemy.
