Bartok
The Hammer
Bartok was born to a respected family amongst an Ogrun tribe that lives outside Brunder in Rhul. His father,Gorrun, is a seasoned hunter for the tribe, helping to train many of the promising Ogrun youth as they come of age. His mother, Chakalla, is a priestess to Dhunia and one of the tribal elders. Bartok has two older brothers, Brokk and Okkon. The family exists comfortably and Bartok had an uneventful, typical childhood.
As the youngest of three boys, Bartok was always a bit of a wanderer. He daydreamed a lot about the grand stories that the tribe shamans and traveling minstrels would tell around the bonfires. Even from an early age he was struck with a bit of wanderlust. His parents often had to pull his head out of the clouds and refocus him on the task at hand.
Bartok's tribe is settled in a small village outside Brunder. Before the claiming, hardly any other races came through their community. Bartok had only ever seen Ogrun until his 10th year. But afterward, all sorts of humanoids passed through the remote village. Most of them were refugees, fleeing the war and carnage that swept through Immoren. Many of the young men and women in his village left at the beginning of the Claiming, traveling to fight alongside the other races against the infernal armies that swarmed through Caen.
Bartok, was one of the many who went to fight. He was no farmer or hunter, and the war was his chance to get out and see the world. He traveled west to Korsk, part of mixed group of Rhulfolk, Khadorans, Trollkin, Gobbers, and Ogrun trained as front line shock troops. Bartok was excited to do his part and to see the larger world outside his village.
His unit avoided a lot of the heaviest fighting, mostly skirmishing in the wilds since that's where most of the troops were from. His company moved through the vast wilderness between the major conflicts, dispatching small roving groups that got separated from the larger infernal army. It wasn't terribly exciting, but Bartok was happy to be experiencing the world... at least until Henge Hold.
His unit was part of the initial assault on infernal troops. Bartok and his comrades battled fiercely in the trenches, fighting back wave after wave of enemy forces. He witnessed the up-close, gritty and grim reality of war for weeks on end. Nearly everyone in his unit was killed horrifically during the assault. All the friends he made over the months of marching through the borderlands were gone. Bartok endured, scrapping and surviving every day until the tides turned.
After the war ended, Bartok left the military, even though his Khadoran superiors offered him a commission and a chance to lead his own unit in the Khadoran Winter Guard. Bartok knew he was a good soldier, but his heart still pulled him towards adventure. He headed back to Rhul, stopping in Hammerfall. Bartok befriended a Rhulic smith and learned the trade, spending a couple of years as his apprentice.
Eventually, his need to wander overtook him and Bartok left Hammerfall for Korsk. In Korsk he wasn't able to find work amongst the smithies. He labored in the coal mines for a bit and eventually, found work on the docks as a laborer. Here is where he met Kami, a Nyss warrior. Kami fought in The Kayazy pit fights in Korsk. She was a bit of a novelty, considering Nyss were not well thought of in Khador. But she was a fierce warrior and had never lost a bout.
She was drinking saki (a lot of saki) after a feature match against an up-and-coming Khadoran fighter whom she utterly humiliated in the fight. The Khadoran's patron accused Kami of sorcery and cheating and hired a group of thugs to take care of her. By the time they found the Nyss, she was nearly two bottles of saki into her celebration. The four men still waited for her to stumble out of the bar and down the alley towards the inn where she had a room.
When Bartok walked by that alley, two of the men were already bleeding out on the cobblestones, but Kami wad been severely wounded as well and the other two men were closing in to finish her off. Bartok intervened and fought off the two men unarmed. He helped Kami to a nearby healer and hung around until the injured warrior had recovered. Thus began a long, lasting friendship.
Batrok has a tattoo would be in remembrance of another fighter Bartok was friends with who was killed in the ring, named Lassan, a trollkin from Khador. He had the same carefree attitude and love of combat as Bartok and whenever they were fighting in the same matches, there was always a hell of a party after. Anyway, Lassan died in a fight with another trollkin, named the Savage Skal. Bartok wasn't there but other fighters have said that Lassan look like he was sick or poisoned halfway through the fight and by the end he was vomiting blood. It's not the first fatality Skal has had in the ring, his matches are always brutal and he has ended several other fighters careers.
Conditions for Nyss in Khador were worsening and Kami needed someone she could trust on her side if she were going to continue fighting in underground matches. Who better to watch her back than a hulking Ogrun? Over the course of the next several months, Bartok traveled with Kami across the realms, learning the ropes of the criminally run pit fights. He kept his friend safe and made sure she always collected her prize money. They had a really good thing going, living on the road, fighting and drinking every night! It was good times.
All good things must end. For Kami and Bartok, it was an unsanctioned fight in the Orgoth ruins under Corvis. Kami was fighting a Cryxian warrior that no one had ever heard of. She was winning handily, until he erupted into an uncontrolled rage and spat some sort of acid into her face, completely covering her left eye and almost blinding her totally. There was no healer available to tend to her wounds and she ended up losing the left eye and her right eye was severely impaired. Kami was crushed and fell into a deep depression for several weeks. eventually facing the fact that her pit fighting career was done.
Over the course of the next few months, Kami got herself together and opened a dojo in Corvis where she trained aspiring fighters. Bartok took a couple gigs as a bodyguard for some nobles, but he wasn't good at staying in one place too long. Kami knew her friend couldn't stay pinned down in Corvis, so she convinced him to enter a local, sanctioned fight for new comers. It wasn't even a contest, Bartok was a natural in the ring. He was offered a couple more local fights and soon began working the circuit. That was almost two years ago.
Now he's on his way back to Corvis, hopefully for a few days to see his friend and maybe find a fight or two...
After meeting The Curator in Fharin, Bartok signed a soul contract. In return for the Kami's success and Savage Skal's demise, he agreed to give 1/3 of all earning to The Curator via a magical coin purse.
