Cardlam Warf

Just barely south of a glacier and tucked on the arm of a peninsula, Cardlam Warf is as isolated as it gets. The harsh snows of the north prevent most, if not all, travel during winter. To make things worse, the next nearest village is over two days walk away, with the nearest trained doctor an entire day's hike up a mountain in the snow.

Demographics

No one at Cardlam Warf is particularly wealthy, but neither is anyone destitute. All resources are shared equally, especially in winter. The population consists of mainly humans, though there are a few Murylegys and even a family of Selkies, if you believe the rumours.

Government

While the village does have a mayor, it's more of a figurehead position. They don't impose taxes on the citizens, and the population is too small to have to enforce any concrete laws. Rather, the existence of their role is merely to negotiate with the occasional trader that might come by, or to parley with ship captains when one happens to stop in at their little port. Typically the position is filled by the innkeeper, mostly for the convenience of being able to keep an eye on visitors to the community.

Industry & Trade

The village is actually fairly self-sufficient. Most food is either grown or foraged during the warmer months and pickled, salted, or smoked to store for winter. Game is hunted most of the year, except during Solstice and Midwinter (as in Lumin, Yvesland is inhabited by fey, though the relationship between them and the humanfolk here is more mutual respect rather than one-sided underlying fear).   Because of the importance of the village hunter, fur is also considered a precious commodity. Excess is sometimes traded on the occasions trading vessels visit, but most are kept in storage for winter. Leather-working is also done here, but very little.   Fish is a staple food as it's both easy to catch and easy to preserve and is a common trade good.

Infrastructure

There is a well, though that's only used in summer, and the paths around the village are well-maintained when the weather allows. Most of Cardlam Warf, however, is underground. Because the winters can be so harsh and cold, it's dangerous to go outside for even a short time as early as late autumn. In order to solve this problem, the citizens of Cardlam Warf built an underground network of tunnels leading between all the houses and holding a large communal gathering area as well as a bathhouse. The homes in Cardlam Warf are primarily underground, with only a small portion being above, similar to a hobbit hole.

Architecture

The houses are all one story at the top, with wooden fronts and covered over with dirt and grass that blooms into beautiful wildflowers in the summer. The inn is the only building with two stories above the ground, though the upper floor is used only for cold storage in the winter. Everything has a very cozy, close to nature sort of aesthetic.

Geography

Placed on the inner curve of a hooked peninsula, Cardlam Warf has prime viewing of the glacier just north of them as it slowly slowly sinks into the sea. Coming closer to the peninsula's connection to the mainland, the ground rises into the first of many mountains that make up the Covenant Range of mountains.
