Cowboy/Cowgirl

Perhaps the archetypal Western character, cowboys and cowgirls drove herds of cattle to market and tended them on ranches from Texas to Montana. Theirs was a hard life, from endless drudgery to backbreaking work in the sun, wind, rain, and snow. Cowpunchers were provided with room and board, and perhaps a dollar a day for wages. Cowgirls, while less common than their male counterparts, were documented in the late 19th century.
