Gunfighter

Hired gunfighters, often outright assassins, who made a dangerous living killing for money. During Wyoming’s Johnson County War, big ranchers hired a small army of gunmen to raid the ranches of their enemies, sending them out with orders to kill. Other gunfighters protected cattle drives or stagecoaches, or served as deputies (often just temporarily in the face of a specific threat). Range or stock detectives, such as Tom Horn, are another historical example of the hired gunman. Bounty hunters, such as Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name,” arguably fall into this category, or that of Lawman. Even the Magnificent Seven were guns for hire.
