Anomaly Abyss
Ah yes, the Anomaly Abyss. This most mysterious crater is by far the biggest cave, crater, well... hole on Cathrea. Its depth is still unknown, some even claim that it is magically altered to be infinitely deep. Its origin, while disputed, is commonly said to be closely tied to the beginning of the world. Most people tend to believe it was made by Kaskataar, goddess of death.
Home of the Portals
It is said to be part of the aftermath of Gods first Punishment. Destruction wipes Cathrea clean and all that was made broken caused mayham. The resulting chaos of raw Magicules is theorized to have caused the emergance of these portals.Eight connected as One
The continents of Cathrea have been declared by the people after the events of The Day Death Will Reveal Herself, orienting themselves after the seven portals (also known as Celestial Anomalies) which emerged after all was over. The Print of Death connects all of these portals and is thus highly sought after. The Anomaly's Beauty
All anomalies appear in their own style. Each one resembling the domain of a Primal Godwith the exception of the most northern one. A portal lies deep within its domain. As example, the Montooran Anomaly lies at the base of the highest mountain, carved inside the mightiest tree along the widest river. Its surroundings are influenced by the amount of nature-touched Magicules flowing out of it. Treeants, squirrels breathing fire, salmon with wings, all is possible in the face of the anomaly. The Pit
The Print of Death, although used in great masses due to the anomalies, houses a deep underground mystery which only a few dare to explore. The pit seems to pull a person in the deeper one ventures. The ones known simply as the Pitwalkers are trained to enter and retrieve what minerals, artifacts, remains and other rarities are found there.Pull of Death
The ones believing that death was created in this very place will say, that the pit still lingers of her scent. So sweet and daring. This belive is also supported by the amount of suicides happening here. five to seven times more people take their lives in the face of the Anomaly Abyss than anywhere else. The ones venturing inside receive special training to resist this urge, although often to no avail.A number not often talked about
The amount of people finding their end here is heavily obscured, since the Pitwalkers who go "missing" are never accounted for. The officials of the Cavligorean Empire actively try to keep the number down by attributing deaths here that were not strictly confirmed to another source of crime, thus inflating the crime rate around the Abyss.Pull of Wealth
Why do people then venture into the pit? What drives them forward? How do they develop such mental fortitude?Greed
Pitwalkers seek out the unknown for lots of reasons, one being greed. Monetary gain is the drive of society. Merchant guilds, historians, aristocrats and so many more seek out the treasures found in the depths that seek to claim one. They pay Pitwalkers as mercenaries and send them on their way to retrieve whatever is to find. Depending on the depth, more valuables of greater rarity can be found. The increase in riches grows porpotionate to the pull of death, resulting in a more costly matter.
The Pitwalkers walking for greed are often self centered, eccentric and work best alone or in a smaller group.
Knowledge
Those who walk for knowledge seek the unknown. They are often tempted the most by deaths call, as the thought of what lies below excites them the most. The ones seeking knowledge collect treasures as well, but often record other things as well, such as wild unknown animals, flora found in the deeper parts and minerals yet undiscovered. They often closely work together with Historians, Researchers and Philosophers. Through their adventures, more and more of the pit is revealed by the day.
