First Mate

On a merchant or navy ship you would often have a First Mate. This was a very respected part of the crew, and if part of the navy, would be next in line to captain their own ship.
Most pirate ships don't have this position but some that often are claiming to be privateers do have them. Especially if they have a large crew.

Duties

This position was often held to help the captain out, and would take control of the ship should the captain be taken out of service.

Responsibilities

Manage the day to day duties of the crew and anything else the Captain wants them to manage.
