New New Paris

This is the home city of the main character in one of the book series, hence its mention here. That said, there is plenty to be interested by about this city. Its vastness as a city larger than, funnily enough, France itself. The presence of an Eiffel Tower (although it has 32 others) so gargantuan that there are many people living in homes built into the metal beams and which reaches into space, acting as a space port. The floating islands above it, home to wealthy individuals avoiding the squalor below, possess enough buildings to be considered large cities in their own right. The city extends half a mile underground, skyward and out in the compass directions, limited only by the CHG's largely successful attempts to make some of the evergrowing population move to newly terraformed planets to colonise them.

Demographics

A large portion but still not most are French. Initially it was also home to many British, Nigerian, Spanish, Portuguese, Somalian and Ethiopian settlers. Later on many in the United Commonwealth (British Empire 2, Electric Boogaloo). However over time it's become difficult to list country-ancestry of residents because listing every country on Earth is difficult. Still the case that most residents will find themselves to be largely French and British as these were the groups that emigrated here the most.

Government

Normally, a single city gets counted as a single region with boroughs being counted as settlements. However, that would just result in it being possible for 1/20 of the population living in the countryside, mostly being the rich as they can have 1-person settlements built everywhere, being able to outvote more than 95percent of the planet...... oh you thought I was saying New New Paris was an exception to this no this is exactly what happens and most Eiff-lers are unhappy about it.

Defences

4 percent of the planet are in the Defence Force, which just means they get to have a safe with a gun in it in their homes that only unlocks if the planet is under attack and receive military training along with reductions in how much they're taxed. Then there's the police forces which are very well armed to take down criminal groups but can always point those guns at alien invaders. There's a constant presence of 200+ warships above the city, along with countless civilian vessels that could be weaponized for a defensive. Every Eiffel Tower has multiple Gaza 14 Death Turrets on it, while the space stations have numerous ones of these (btw: Never annoy someone with one of those turrets). There's a portal near the planet that allows for military forces to arrive close to immediately if the city is attacked.

Industry & Trade

Copper, energy, consumer goods, entertainment, trinkets, machinery and especially the construction of space ships.

Infrastructure

An Eiffel Tower that's so massive and tall that it provides extra living space and doubles as a space port. A sewer system that sort of combined with underground settlements to make a really weird, probably unhealthy for the inhabitants, underground world. Pretty much every river running through the city is used to acquire electricity and is full of garbage that has to be filtered out as the river-water leaves the city. The space stations above the city technically count as part of it. Bridges over rivers that have had more bridges built over those same rivers and then expanded until they practically form a single dodgy-looking bridge. Floating islands, kept in position by gravity fields. Roads seemingly floating on air (gravity nets got yo back, New New Paris, you don't need no support columns no more) that are a hundred or more meters wide as automated cars move along in specific patterns so that everyone gets to work quickly.

Assets

Massive underground food stores in case of a serious famine. There's copper ore beneath the city which is useful for electronics: this is a highly technologically advanced society there are electronics everywhere so this is a brilliant asset. The magma beneath the surface of the planet is slightly hotter than that of Earth, all the better for geothermal energy.

Guilds and Factions

Numerous criminal groups operate within the city, bribing and stabbing their way around issues such as "wait a minute why are entire sectors of the city run by criminal organisations?". There are political factions within the planet's democracy arguing as to how to approach issues such as there being massive criminal organisations operating in the city. Workers unions often work towards things like getting the right politicians into power and ensuring higher wages for members. Large companies often make deals with one another to use criminal organisations to take down workers unions.

History

So it started with the CHG's at-the-time best terraformed planet and the CHG trying to encourage French people to move there by calling it New New Paris. This worked. But then tonnes of people from other countries and even planets also came along and, with it impossible to track everything, the CHG decided to just give out free rations to everyone so they wouldn't resort to cannibalism or start any rebellions and let things happen. Building was extremely disorganised and still is to this day. Eventually the CHG was able to install order into the place and it's continued to grow since. During Jeff/Geff's rebellion, billions fled to the city as it was far away from the robotic uprising and this bolstered the population for some more mass homelessness and unemployment. To date it is the 82nd most populated city in the CHG.

During the first days of the Great Terrorist war, it was one of the planets that was subject to mass-hostage-taking by the Terrorist Organisation through the VR Net due to it being within the Athena Ring.

Architecture

Hundreds of years in which technology and architecture have changed have allowed for wildly varying buildings. Some roads are the likes of that made by primitive xeno scum in that it still needs columns beneath it to go skyward while others know the righteousness that is gravity nets. Eiffel towers vary depending on when they were built. Houses vary from slum shacks to 100+ story mansions.

Geography

Was built in an area that had mountains on 3 sides of it. At first it was "oh let's build away from mountains" then it was "there can't be any mountains surrounding the city if the mountains are IN the city". The city is larger than France itself. None of the rivers that flow into the city flow out again as instead new rivers are made from excess water that is pumped out into ditches leading into existing rivers near the city, causing most of these rivers to heavily flood their banks.

Natural Resources

Copper, magma, the planet itself having extremely fertile land that produces great bounties of food.
