Larian

The Kingdom of Larian was a sovereign kingdom of the 43rd century, which was divided from the Kingdom of Goth. During it's life, it claimed to be the true successor to Queen Percival's united Kingdom of Goth, but was rivaled by the Kingdom of Halfia in it's claims. It composed of the duchies of Manneruck and Fenestein.

History

According to the Larian Chronicle, after the death of Queen Percival, the Goths saw a point of contention between the heir brothers, Percival and Gabriel, in the year 4257. However, such qualms were satisfied when King Percival granted his brother Gabriel a duchy holding. It would come into strife, however, as the so-claimed bastard daughter of Queen Percival, Ieasbreda, plotted to gain the throne for herself, as her brothers ruled the Petty Kingdom of Brymoor. She ordered assassins to take care of Prince Gabriel and King Percival in 4260. However, her plot proved incomplete, as though Percival died, Gabriel was merely blinded while he fought off his killer.   But Ieasbreda still claimed her right as queen and thus sent a host of loyal Brymoorians to come into Halfia and defend her claim while she bribed the lord of Diede-Hofen to grant her the realm. Thus, the Blind King and the Bastard Queen fought in the year 4262, but the skirmish remained incomplete. The decades afterward, the land of Larian found many problems, including a rise in banditry, knight factions fighting, and over taxation plaguing the realm.

Structure

King Gabriel by Paradox Interactive
Gabriel the Blind was called the first King of Larian as the death of his brother divided the Kingdom of Goth.
The land of Larian was a feudalistic state in it's height, with a king ruling over lesser dukes and lords whom he sent charters to enforce his rule of law. The authority of the king could be put into question, however, by the dukes at their councils. Primarily, the King of Larian would handle the matters of taxation, military, infrastructure, etc. but still was focused on appeasing the dukes of Fenestein and the dukes of Manneruck.   Besides the ruling class, the lowest class is the peasantry, who tend farms and work for their lords as serfs or indentured servants. They make up 90% of the populace. Slightly above them but the most revered is the artisan class, a group of people who focus on fine crafts and researching great technologies. This also includes wizards, bards, and their schools.
A group of independent rangers within the forests of Courtia. These groups of forestmen grew in romantic popularity within the eyes of the Gothan people, being the subjects of songs and plays much to their annoyance. Often they got into conflict with the Crown Foresters themselves.
Some of the people of Larian, however, also serve as rangers or, in the negative sense, outlaw factions. These are groups of wanderers who make their homes in the wilderness and act as independent from the kingdom. Some of these rangers protect the woods for the King in exchange for their independence, but the outlaws make the uncharted woods their homes to harm the people of Larian. Unruled are the fey as well, often found in the deepest parts of the forests, or the Elves south of Dert.

Culture

The culture of the Larian people was one of "pretention" as outsiders would call it. They have a high revere for the arts and fine food, and often do not settle for less. Even for peasants, the finest cheese and alcohol you could get was expected for you to produce. It was thus a hard life, but one that brought respect to the Larian people. They were a people of discipline and hard-work.   An intriguing part of the Larian culture was the obsession with the "rangers" in their golden age. Often the people of Goth viewed themselves as civilized, but also viewed such a life as boring. The excitement of the rangers allured the Gothan mind, many wishing to become rangers themselves. The ranger thus became a romantic figure, similar to the chivalrous knights in the regions of Lisanrik and Keller. Many wished to become one themselves, including nobles of high esteem. However, such a demanding lifestyle turned aspiring youth and citizens to realize that, in fact, their simple lives were better.
