Acadia is a refuge and safe haven for synths that have fled from, escaped, or were otherwise liberated from the Institute.  Even after the Institute's destruction in 2290, they continue to operate as a commune.
Most individuals that are part of the refuge don't leave the Acadia Observatory after they settle, preferring the safety and seclusion of the mountaintop to the potential distrust and hostility from other groups.
The refuge is responsible for the development and production of the Fog Condensers that protect many of the Island's human settlements, but it subsequently caused tensions to rise between them and the Children of Atom.
In 2290, the refuge was visited by General Aubrey Wilson of the Commonwealth Minutemen and Detective Nick Valentine of Diamond City.  With their help, tensions between the three factions were eased, and Acadia continues to eke out a simple existence at the top of the mountain.
