Oyatare

Oyatare: waterfolk. These people have light blue to lavender skin, translucent and jelly textured for many of them, can be scaled or not. Sometimes subtly patterned. They have gills in addition to lungs and can breathe underwater. Their leg muscles are powerful and they have webbed, flipper-like feet. Oyatare are typically not the most agile on land and usually stay in coastal areas or near water at all times. Shoes are hard to find for their people, and are imaginably quite uncomfortable with their foot type. Might even have to wear a special type of shoe for muscle support, as their flippers don’t have much for supporting the rest of their body. It is very common to hear of them complaining of the dryness of land. They have 2 eyes on the top of their heads, typically black, unless blind. Fingers are also webbed. These people don't like to wear clothes, and if they do, they're usually made of seaweed that's been woven into a loose hanging cloth, but they will only wear these when on land. Most have some sort of fins on their heads or spines, and on the back of their forearms. Can have hair, and if they do, it is usually an extreme light or dark. Their language involves a lot of clicking and trills, and when they speak other languages, they have sharp endings to their words and clip syllables often. When they have children, it is common to have more than one at once, but never more than 3, and during pregnancy their skin turns more purple as the child(ren) grow, or toward black if the person is naturally purple.   If they 'dry out' they become irritable and their skin grows dull and starts to peel. Can lead to permanent scarring or death if they become too dehydrated.   These people live rather long life cycles at ~200 years. They occupy the small landmass called Hatha, which is so low to sea-level, that much of it is underwater when the tide comes in. They use dug canals off of rivers to get around rather than roads.   Because this is such a small area they occupy, many consider the Oyatare essentially endangered/extinct as a race, which couldn’t be farther from the truth.   Underneath the surface of the ocean, they have occupied part of the ocean larger than Idola and Akha put together.   These people worship Suijizo as a culture. More on that in Religions.   They very much enjoy music!   Most magic the Oyatare people use is water or illusion based, and can sometimes be very creative in usage. For example, for underwater buildings to exist where land items won’t be destroyed, many buildings have been cast upon with permanent bubble charms, and books especially are charmed to resist the water. Sometimes they pull pranks on people coming too close to their territory, especially of their pirates, and mess with the flow of water to push them away.   Malkai is probably the only country that knows of Hatha’s underwater presence (I wouldn’t doubt the existence of an underwater library from them). Maybe Feldock too.
