Hello, I'm Alex Markov, and my story starts right here in Portland, Oregon, where I stepped into adulthood. Portland's a gem, nestled amidst lush forests and by the calm waters of the Willamette River. Out here, loving the great outdoors isn't a hobby; it's a way of life, and that's where my tale takes off.
Growing up in Portland meant nature was my playground. My old man, a nature buff, used to take me and my sisters to Columbia River Gorge on weekends. We'd hike through thick woods, scramble up rocky cliffs, and stare in awe at Multnomah Falls. Those trips gave me a deep bond with the outdoors and a deep love for the Pacific Northwest's stunning beauty.
My interest in engineering and structures goes way back. I was that kid who'd dismantle toys just to see how they worked, much to my folks' amusement and sometimes annoyance. Civil engineering and construction seemed to be in my veins.
After my education, I kicked off as a junior Civil Technician. Going from studying to working on construction sites was a thrill. I found myself neck-deep in blueprints, surveying sites, and watching architectural ideas turn into real structures. Seeing a project come to life filled me with pride. I was all in, eager to make Portland even more beautiful with my work.
Beside the construction world, there was my other love - music. Playing the guitar has been my refuge since I was a teen. It's where I escape, unwind, and create something beautiful. Often, the great Pacific Northwest inspired my music, and the melodies I made on my guitar echoed the rustling leaves in the woods and the rhythm of the Willamette River. At one point, I played in a local band, but these days, it's more about playing for myself, expressing my creativity.
Being a big brother to my two sisters, Katti and Kayla, is a role I take to heart. Watching them grow and develop was both a privilege and an adventure. We're a close-knit family, bonded by our love for outdoor adventures, from camping to hiking in the Cascade Range. Their boundless energy could be a handful, but it's a journey I wouldn't trade.
Juggling a job, my music, and my family was one of the bigger challenges of adulthood. It took some planning and time management, and in the middle of it all, I learned to prioritise and look after myself. Amid the whirlwind, I always found moments of peace in the wonders of Oregon. Weekend hikes with Siobhan and our son, Trent, helped us bond as a family.
My mother, Lexi, a dynamic real estate agent, had a big role in shaping my work ethic and perspective on life. She taught me the value of hard work and that the world was full of opportunities waiting to be grabbed. Her determination and success were inspiring, and she showed that balancing work and family was possible. Her guidance was a constant source of inspiration, and she was always there with advice and support.
Adulthood was just starting for me, and while I embraced the responsibilities and challenges, I also savoured the journey, one note and one blueprint at a time. It was an adventure unfolding, with the beauty of the Pacific Northwest as my backdrop and the rhythm of music as my companion.
