Battle of Sunnywood
The Battle of Sunnywood was the first military conflict to be waged on United States soil since the Wounded Knee Massacre and the first attack since the September 11 attacks. The battle took place in the city of Sunnywood , Florida and lasted from January 14th to January 18th between the combined forces of the five major United States Armed Forces branches and Majestic against the kaiju Regu . It also marked the beginning of a series of kaiju attacks that would persist throughout the year, dubbed the Invasive Species Skirmishes.
The Conflict
Prelude
Majestic agents were tracking an alligator from Louisiana that had ingested a potent sample of great amniotic fluid after the transport carrying it crashed during a storm. The alligator began to evolve and shift through a couple of different forms, with several attacks taking place across the state. It followed the coastline to Florida where it escaped into the Everglades and grew further. More aggressive hunting of the now kaiju-status creature throughout the wilderness provoked it into attack.
Deployment
After the kaiju ventured from the Everglades and into Sunnywood, army and marine forces engaged the kaiju via ground and aerial combat, with the air force joining them not too long after. Majestic agents were able to deploy maser tanks on the scene within the day to try and turn the tide of battle.
Battlefield
The city of Sunnywood would be used as both weapons and cover by American ground forces and the kaiju in their standoff with one another.
Outcome
After four steady days of consistent conflict, the kaiju eventually returned to the Everglades out of either boredom or exhaustion. Helicopters scouted over the stretch of land but were called off to avoid provoking the kaiju further. Many sections were blocked off from access because of spilled kaiju blood, which was considered a biological hazard.
Aftermath
Opinions are split as to whether the battle was a defeat or a stalemate. The kaiju itself was neither killed nor driven out, instead exiting of its own volition. Majestic and U.S. forces suffered heavy casualties, with response and effectiveness receiving mixed public reception. While many praised the soldiers' actions as heroic sacrifices, others decried their lack of progress and collateral damage to the city. Though Sunnywood was not completely leveled, the Sunnywood Strip and Sunnywoodland bore much of the destruction from both the kaiju and military ordinance. Many civilians died in the crossfire, with estimates for both them and military forces being in the thousands.
Though plans to rebuild Sunnywood were instated, Florida experienced a mass exodus farther inland to escape the kaiju. The economy hemorrhaged money and viable workers because of fear of the kaiju's return, and the state fell into a major recession. Sunnywood reconstruction suffered and fell greatly behind as a result, leading to much of it being overgrown by the encroaching Everglades. Inversely, recruitment numbers for the U.S. military jumped dramatically.
Historical Significance
Legacy
The Battle of Sunnywood cost the lives of many, including one of the military's highest-ranking combat engineers. Sergeant Major Hayata Tsubaraya suffered critical injuries during the final day of battle and was treated around the clock until he ultimately passed on January 25th. His innovations in the field of military tech were considered invaluable and even irreplaceable.
January 14th is officially known as K-Day (Kaiju Day) in the United States and was designated a federal holiday. The revelation that giant monsters existed out in the world spread fear and terror throughout the globe, prompting many militaries to start mobilizing their arsenals en masse. Majestic also began working faster than they had ever done before.
It also marked the beginning of what would be called the Invasive Species Skirmishes.
