Guatemala (gwah-tem-maul-uh)
Guatemala is a country located in Central America beneath Mexico , west of Belize, and north of both Honduras and El Salvador . It sports the largest population in Central America and the 11th highest in all of the Americas. The nation was the cradle for the Maya civilization until colonization from Spain , and it would gain independence from both Spain and Mexico in 1821. Guatemala was a founding member of the United Nations .
