Qetz (kets)

Qetz (a.k.a. Quetzalcoatl | King of the Feathered Serpents)

Qetz was the guardian monster of the Aztec Empire in its prime and the protector of Mesoamerica, as well as the de-facto leader of the five feathered serpent kaiju. The feathered serpent protects the land of Mexico .

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Qetz is one of the most visually striking kaiju to exist, sporting a broad variety of colors. Its scaled form resembles the spiny bush viper of Africa with piercing yellow eyes mirroring the sun, enormous wyvern wings, and a keratin rattle at the tip of its tail.

Body Features

Its feathers are a brilliant rainbow coloration that seem to shimmer in the sunlight. Like all feathered serpents, it is capable of flight.

Special abilities

Venom can be projected from its fangs like that of a spitting cobra, but - unlike cobra venom - Qetz' burns the skin and can even dissolve concrete. It can prove absolutely devastating to humans, animals, and cryptids, it seems to only serve as a sedative and chemical agent that induces sickness in other kaiju.    Like all other kaiju, Qetz also possesses an advanced healing factor, able to heal broken bones and damaged body parts that would be unsalvagable for normal animals. Its taut scales allow it to shrug off conventional human artillery and stand up to more unconventional mecha weaponry. Its regenerative healing abilities plus the advanced amniotic-addled DNA has made Qetz immortal, only killable via starvation or another kaiju.

Specialized Equipment

Qetz also utilizes its rattle like a club, whipping at its opponents from a distance. The unique design of the rattle is theorized to be the inspiration for the macuahuitl club.

Personal history

  • Species description: Serpenopteryx quetzalcoatzin
  • Biological basis: Feathered serpent
  • Diet: Carnivorous
  • Size: 100 feet long
Thousands of years ago, the region from Mexico down to South America was home to a plethora of many exotic kaiju. The most iconic were the feathered serpents, a unique family of snakes capable of flight. Their origins were from the great amniotic fluid like all cryptids and kaiju. From the feathered serpents, a few were able to evolve into kaiju. These feathered serpent kaiju - Awanyu, Kukulkan, Xiuhcoatl, Qʼuqʼumatz - all held supremacy over the region, but chief among them was Quetzalcōātl. Being the most powerful of his brethren, he kept them in line with strict discipline and violence if needed. Together, they were known as the Five Sons by the proto-Mesoamerican society that worshipped them. They guarded the land and protected their progeny from other kaiju. As cultures in Mesoamerica changed and diversified - across the Olmecs, Zapotecs, Maya, Toltecs, Aztecs, and others - so did the perception of the feathered serpents, the knowledge from the proto-Mesoamericans recontextualized, misinterpreted, mistranslated, forgotten, or even rewritten across various scholars. Though human civilization changed, the Five Sons remained steadfast in protecting their territory from other kaiju and humans who lacked trepidation.   At some point, Qetz had gone to do battle with a kaiju named Tezcatlipōca, chasing him across the sea. The latter was ultimately killed but not before greatly wounding Qetz. Despite his best efforts, the great feathered serpent did not possess the strength to return all the way back to Mesoamerica and ultimately had to burrow inside a mountain that would one day dwell within Rio de Janeiro .

In his absence, the Spanish Conquistadores arrived to lay siege to the Aztec Empire. The remaining feathered serpent kaiju lacked the strength of their brother and fell one by one, hunted by the conquistadores for their colorful feathers, scales, and eggs. Soon, the majority of all cryptids and kaiju were hunted to extinction across Mesoamerica and South America. Thousands of years later, Qetz awoke to find his land, brothers, species, and followers wiped away. The last feathered serpent cut a bloody swathe across Mexico to retake its territory.

Intellectual Characteristics

Qetz is unique in that it displays higher than average intelligence for a kaiju, capable of problem-solving and tactics. The feathered serpent is no stranger to close combat, utilizing constriction techniques as well as possessing a venomous bite. It is a prime example of fighting smarter, not harder. Spreading its wings and rattling, it will attempt to intimidate opponents into submission or fleeing rather than direct conflict. If this does not work, Qetz will attempt to outpace its opponent and deliver quick strikes to win battles. Very rarely does it forego these tricks in favor of close one-to-one combat. The feathered serpent is quite protective of its territory and very quickly seeks to prove its superiority over others in its vicinity. Despite being a kaiju capable of flight, Qetz rarely flies, instead preferring to crawl along the ground like a wyvern. The great serpent prefers the warmth of the tropical Mexican jungles, occasionally making excursions farther south into Central America for unknown reasons. Despite its higher intelligence and capability for reasoning, Qetz is still a kaiju and prone to raw animal instinct, such as when it attacked the iconic Cristo Redentor for believing it to be a threat.

Environmental Impact

While it leaves massive destruction in its wake when provoked, its influence on the environment is profound. Its feces is high in protein - both natural and amniotic-addled - and benign nuclear isotopes that - after being absorbed by the soil and filtered into the water - cause immense population booms in the flora and fauna inhabiting its region. Flowering plants and trees will grow wildly, and animals experience high birth rates. Endangered species slowly climbed out of the endangered species list thanks to its presence. Fish, shark, and even whale populations ballooned in the region, counterbalanced by Qetz's feeding upon them. Snakes also flourish in abundance where Qetz nests.

Miscellaneous Information

Qetz is one of the most well-documented kaiju in human history. Cryptozoologists and cryptoarchaeologists claim it influenced all pre-Inca Mesoamerican culture more than anything else. Most knowledge of it has sadly been lost on account of changes across cultures and the destruction of documentation at the hands of the Spanish Empire. It is also unique in that it is one of the few kaiju to have evolved from an existing cryptid species rather than having once been a normal animal that evolved by chance exposure to the great amniotic fluid.
