Trachodon (track-oh-dawn)

Trachodon is an amphibious hadrosaurid dinosaur native to and only found in Pellucidar . It was discovered by Professor Morrison Westernraugh in 1925 during his expedition into the Amazon Rainforest . They are the most prolific herbivores within the hollow earth pocket.

Basic Information

Anatomy

It maintains a similar body plan to conventional hadrosaurs but possesses a broader, fin-like tail for swimming. The beak it sports more resembles that of spoonbills.

Genetics and Reproduction

Like all reptiles, they reproduce by laying eggs. Trachodon nest very much like ducks and obscured them with foliage in dirt.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Trachodon feed from swamp grass and foliage beneath the water, grinding it all to pieces with its battery of teeth.

Behaviour

They are a rather docile species with rather simplistic intelligence. With that said, they are strong enough to drag a boat underwater.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Families typically consist of a mother looking after her hatchlings in a similar fashion to ducks. Males are distant but never too far, acting as lookouts for the herd.

Civilization and Culture

History

The dinosaur is a direct descendent of the Edmontosaurus. according to genetic analysis. Like all of Pellucidar's saurian inhabitants, the progenitors were taken from the surface world by the Elder Things  and added into the simulated environment, evolving and adapting over time to their new home.
