History of Corea

The history of Corea, as a whole, divided into three areas based on the Rise and Fall of the various Empires that have shaped her.

Dragon-Giant War

... 1999 FA

The time before the Dragonpurge, when Corea was dominated by the Giants and the Dragons,-- and then devestated by the War between these two mighty empires, which only ended with the Banishment of the Dragons.

    the Dragonpurge
    Era beginning/end

The specifics of the event are not generally known, except that something happened to the Dragon Shrine,-- ripping it from the fundamental of Corea and in the process banishing the Dragons. Only a few of the Wyrm's were left afterwards, and their numbers had already been whittled down from their narrow victory in the Dragon-Giant War,--   --the end result was something of a boon for Civilization, as the Dragons had not truly been a civilizing force upon the world, and since the Dragon's had already whittled away the Giants? The Purge left room for the younger races to grow into the world.

Dawn Age

The time between the Dragonpurge and the Rise of the Miasma, when the Great Empires existed, officially brought to its end by the Rise and Fall of the Skellasti Empire and the Banishment of the Gith.

    Construction beginning/end

The Dwarves of Mhor constructed a series of Delves, spreading out from their initial home in Mhorlund to Holds constructed on all of the major continents of Corea, passing first into Kievan and then into the Northlands, eventually ensuring that broad Underdark passages, waystops, holdfasts, and such connected all of the continents.   Even before the Delves themselves were finished, the Dwarves began to expand further and further into the Underdark, passing deeper and deeper into the depths and constructing the Deep Delves and numerous Underholds. Even long before the construction itself finished, the Delves heralded free and easy passage between all of the continents,-- into the depths of the Underdark,- faciliating an era of travel and commerce that would never again see its equal.

    The Flight from Arcadia
    Population Migration / Travel

Father opens the doors from Arcadia, leading the Little Folk from Arcadia into the Feywild and Corea itself,--   --and he is only the first.   For most of the Dawn Age, the Fey continue to flee their homes, emerging from the Outer Barrier and taking up residence in the other worlds. Many of them end up losing their Fey nature almost entirely, becoming mortal beings, while others retain their ethereal nature. Matters of Seelie and Unseelie, of the Seasonal Courts, mostly remain confined to the Feywild and even then are greatly curtailed from the norm that so many of the emigrants had fled from in Arcadia. In Corea itself, such distinctions are almost forgotten, even amongst those peoples who retain their Fey natures.

    Founding of Idonia
    Founding

Father's people settle into the fertile fields of Idonia, founding the first Kingdom of the Little Folk.   The Kingdom's Capital, Ravenna, was settled on the ruins of a previous settlement that seemed to have vanished without a trace some centuries before and which was only one of many such ruins that were found in the lands settled by the recently arrived Little Folk. The fey did very little to preserve what little remained of these people, wiping away much record of their existence in the process, though largely out of a lack of understanding that these people were truly gone than any active malice.   The Little Folk did make contact with some of the various human settlements that did remain, however, and this contact generally went well and could be considered quite peaceful. Even today, a few human families remain in Idonia that date back to the Dawn Age,--   --these humans taught the Little Folk much of the ways of Corea, and it's sacred places, even initiating some of those who would eventually become House Beltan into the Druidic Circles that dotted the landscape in those days.

Dependent on and vastly benefiting from the Dwarven Delves that have just recently been completed, the Gith waste no time in further exploring (and settling; and fortifying) the Underdark.   This brings their Empire into an almost unrivaled position, only surpassed by the Dwarves of the Mohr and the Jeweled City of Iprum. Wealth and power and magic flow through the lands of Skelles, both above and below the surface, creating a cultural center of singular significance where multiple peoples are gathered together under a singular banner.

With large parts of their civilization still kept away from the sun's kiss,-- if not particularly deep,- Skelles slow atrophy is only exacerbated by the growing madness of their elite.
Many of the outlying holdings become more distant, almost to the point of independence, and the Gith themselves find their focus overall shifting from statesmanship to more arcane pursuits. Cultural event

The Skellasti finally begin to pull themselves out of the long malaise that had struck them after the Miasma's rise, refocusing themselves on the world that had once been theres and would be there's again. This begins with a series of wars, reinforced with legions of Devils and inventive use of Battle Magic, aimed at regaining lost territory and bringing errant lands back under their control.   As the various distant provinces fall back under the control of Madoril, the Empire only tightens their grip on them, mercilessly breaking any appearance of dissent and abandoning all pretense of unity or brotherhood. Anything of worth,-- or, especially, of power, is sent back to the capital at Madoril where it is to be put to it's most efficient use by the Heirs of Skelles. All power is centralized, inefficiencies in the government are smoothed away and summoned entities do more and more work for an increasingly indolent upper caste.   Even as the empire expands it's reach to heights that it has not enjoyed since their victory over Orlay, the Gith themselves continue to delve deeper and deeper into magics that they had long overlooked, even drawing the legacies of other lands into their libraries and enriching themselves with lore and knowledge unheard of in all the world.

    Celestial / Cosmic

Few alive today can truly claim to understand how the Lightmotes themselves worked, much less how the Bearer's used them to consume their Gods but the fact that such was done is unmistakable.   Some Motlundian scholars believe that the Lightmote was originally created as an answer to the Whispering Lady, whom the Skellasti called Ralakesh, but if so such plans were never made manifest. Instead, the Skellasti winnowed away at many of the Shrines that dotted the parts of the world where they controlled, drained away the Clerics of rival faiths and those Angels that manifested to stop them, and eventually even laid siege to the Divinities themselves.   No small number of Skellasti Gods simply ceased to be...   ...but the greater number of them were simply worn away, losing even their names, and becoming lesser in some fashion. Eventually, as mysteriously as it started and exactly a decade from when their assault began, the Bearers stopped their assaults and instead gathered in Madoril for some purpose.

    Disaster / Destruction

After the Celestinian Alliance finally managed to break the lines of the Infernal Armies and scatter them, the way was open to lay siege to Madoril itself and bring the All-Hallows War to an end.   The Siege itself was long and marked with constant counterattacks, fell magics, and even what was best guessed to be 'stolen' Divine Intervention. Many texts tell the tale of the three month siege, but the most authoritative is said to have been written by Celestinian himself, "When Heaven's Part".   When the final defenses of the city finally fell, and the Heroes of the Alliance stormed the Apex of Darkness to put an end to whatever ritual the Gith were working, the Alliances' broader forces are said to have gone mad with bloodlust and turned the final assault on the city into a bloodbath otherwise unparalleled in Corea's long history. At the climax of the assault, something happened,-- all that anyone ever said was that the Gith's ritual was disrupted,-- enacting a magical catastrophe that left the city wracked and ruined.   Large sections of the city simply vanished,-- --the oldest sections of Madoril nothing but a blasted blackened crater that still crackles with fresh fires to this day.   What little buildings were left standing, the Soldiers of the Alliance tore down before finally leaving the city behind never to be rebuilt.

The young Emperor finally sets out from Arn early in the Spring, moving West, into the ancient lands of Budan-Mar with a modest-sized host of Mages, Holy Men, and no fewer than 11 different Imperial Companies (one of which he had been a member of prior to his Imperial ascension).    As the expedition heads into the lands of Budan-Mar, they find themselves moving right into the middle of one of the many wars being fought between the two ancient rivals. Through a mixture of skullduggery, intrigue, and raw Charisma, Erevan manages to not just end the war but actually bring the two ancient warring city-states into the fold of the Empire before moving on and making contact with the Dwarves of Ornat where he wintered. The next spring, the Expedition then continues on into the wild lands of Davomar (which will one day be called the Free Cities), where the Emperor slays a rampaging Dragon with his companions, rescues an Elf Maiden from an ancient curse (and marries her), and founds no fewer than three cities before eventually pushing on into the lands of Idonia to meet with his Fathers' oldest allies.   Even as the Emperor stays there, "coincidentally" seeming to found the city that would one day be known as Ravenna, his Company continues on,--   --pressing into the battle scarred lands of Dalmatia, and onward to the Straights of Aetheril, before heading into the lands of Skellast to ascertain the state of affairs on the other continent. Madoril is explored for the first time since the War, and contact is made with some of the surviving Niocene settlements (not.. always.. hostile), before the Company eventually engages with a terrible Fiend by the name of Mephistopheles and eventually withdraws back into safe territory.

    Shattering of the Ocean Heart
    Disaster / Destruction

The Ocean Heart, one of the Pillars of Creation-- a "Shrine" of immeserable power from which the raw elemental power of Water enters into Corea,- is shattered by some unknown disaster. This shatters the entire Western half of the Mohrlands, inflicting untold destruction upon the original homeland of the Dwarves and those peoples who dwelled upon her shores.   Tidal Waves wrack much of Kievan-Beyond-The-Peaks and the Northlands.   The Merfolk, once peaceful, are driven insane and become the maddened cannibalistic Mer.   Once the damage is inspected it's apparents that the Mohrlands are... mostly gone.. with only the singular mountain of "the Mohr" itself remaining intact. Multiple Dwarfholds were flooded and destroyed, with the singular surviving Hold having managed to hold out even when pushed under the sea due to some ingenious over-engineering only to be ravaged and destroyed by the Mer.   (Alas, there will never be Sea Dwarves in Corea.)   The remaining parts of the Mohrlands instead become known as the Broken Isles and form a scattered chain of chaotic islands between Angkor and the Eastern Tip of Kievan. These lands were stripped bear of much life, at first, but vegetation soon regrows-- and with it, terrible monsters, which infest the Broken Isles at a density that beggars the imagination of anyone not from the region.

    Keepers of the Bough
    Founding

Following the destruction of the Ocean Heart, a great meeting of Druids from all across Corea takes place under the shade of the World Tree. Some amongst the Druidic Circles express worries for the continued safety of the World Tree, noting that the Ocean Heart is now destroyed and that the Dwarves of the Mhor never actually managed to locate a "Fire Shrine" of any sort.   Of the four elemental tethers that one would expect, only two remain.   The World Tree, tucked away in Kievan-Across-The-Peaks, from which all life and fertility enters into the world, and the North Wind, roaming chaotically across the Northlands, which shifts the weather, creates the Seasons, and brings dynamism to the world. While the world's oceans had apparently survived the destruction of the Heart, they were noticeably more chaotic, less-regulated, and the danger of the Merc went without being stated.   The world might never recover from the loss of the Heart.   The effect of losing either Wind or Tree could be equally devastating.   Most of the Druids from the North left, intent on shepheard the Wind and ensuring it's safety, a holy mission that is still held in sacred trust by the Northern Druidic Circles. Many Druids, however, felt of the two elemental tethers remaining? The World Tree was far more vulnerable. Indeed, many civilizations used it's unlimited fecundity as a source of easy to harvest timber and who knew what damage such abuse could lead to?   So were formed the Keepers of the Bough.   And, soon after, so began the Culling.

Even as the Druids "encouraged" most of the closest villages to clear out, the inhabitants of kingdoms and cities within the bounds of the proclamation gave little thought to what was happening.   They had lived in these lands for generations.   Slowly pushed back the forests, cultivated the land, claimed these lands as their Own? Who were these Druids to tell them that they now had to leave and head to the Coasts?

    The Culling
    Population Migration / Travel

After having their first "warnings" largely ignored, the Arch-Druids of the Keepers of the Bough elected to enforce the ultimatum that they had laid down.   No cultivation of the land, no raising of cities, within 10,000 leagues of the Lifegiver.   The modest sized towns, who had been struggling to deal with the loss of their logging villages, were the first to be hit and many of them were simply wiped out. Most of the nations were confident that they could make some form of arrangement with the Druids, but the Empire of Amaunaur decided that these holy men needed to taught a lesson and they raised an army.   An army that met no resistance until it entered into the forest...   ...an army that never returned..   Then, with their counterpush, the Arch-Druids of the Bough simply undid the Empire. Each of the cities that hosted them were swallowed alive by nature, buried in Earthquakes, or-- as in the case of the Capital,- invaded by a numberless host of wild animals and turned into a bloody site of slaughter.   The "War of the Bough", thus, lasted all of two weeks.   At which point the various Kingdoms "Between the Peaks" began to evacuate closer to the shore, leaving their original settlements fallow.

A rough coalition of Hill Tribes, Orcs, Goblins, Centaur, and even some Dwarves combines to turn the Tombrian Expanse into the Sovereign Nation of Tombria.   They elect a Half-Orc as their War Chief and set out to wage war against Faerlund to drive the Steppe Elves out of the lands that they hold as rightfully theirs. The fighting is brutal, and harsh, but in the end the Faer abandon the territory and begrudgingly accept their new neighbor.

    Orcs Attack!
    Military action

The first major Orcish Horde in Arnorian History flows down the neck, into Budan-Mar, as several Orc Clans band together under a charismatic leader in hopes of establishing safe rangelands for their people in the prosperous lands to the South.   This isn't the first that the Empire has seen of Orc's, as smaller migrations had been happening over the course of the last century or so, but it was the first of the larger violent hordes. General mobility and the fierceness of their warriors sees them to initial success, razing numerous villages and towns and even breaking through the walls of Neeron and laddening themselves with pillage.   ...which is where the 7th Legion, out of Budan, found them..   Drunk, heavy with loot, and still "otherwise engaged," the Imperial Legion fell upon the Horde and almost finished the battle before it was over. None the less, the Horde managed to rally, one of the subordinate chieftans rallying his Clan and staging a brutal counterattack which allowed the rest of the warriors to regroup and turn the fight into a true battle.   In the end, however, the Horde scattered...   ...and the legion, licking it wounds, wondered how poorly that would have gone if they hadn't crashed upon a distracted force that wasn't expecting battle.

    Population Migration / Travel

The Faerlundian's, no longer being goaded into killing each other by Graz'zt, finally decide to deal with the matter of their "new neighbor". The Tombrian's fight valiantly against the Elven Onslaught, but are ultimately defeated, many scattering down the Neck and into the lands of Budan-Mar.   ...this, in turn, causes yet more violence as the refugees find themselves engaged with Imperial Forces who have had to deal with a few "Orc Invasions" over the last century. This, however, was something different and proved much more effect. Several cities are sacked, the City of Mar is razed by the ground, and the refugees actually manage to cut down the first Legion that attempts to deal with them before deciding to head further South before they find themselves dealing with more Half-Elves.   Avoiding Ornat, more or less, the Tombrian's head straight into Davomar where they once again engage in some light pillaging before beginning to settle in the nicks and crannies of the Province. Most of the Goblins, in particular, end up branching off from the rest of the group and settling in Merovin...   ...infesting Merovin..

    Succession of Davomar
    Civil action

Demeria, a regional power in Davomar, refuses pay taxes to the Empire and elects it's own independent officials in defiance of the official Provincial Government in Mournhall. Following this declaration, three other cities in the same region follow suit.   The Governor attempts to rally troops to put down the "rebellion", but a gradual lack of support from the capital has drained his armory and starved his provincial troops. Requests for assistance from the Capital are seemingly ignored and attempts to call in either the 11th or 19th Legion are actively rejected.   Eventually, rather than risking a war that he might lose, the Governor simply accepts the succession of the four cities from the Province, noting that he'll be withdrawling all "provincial support" from these "Free Cities" but well aware of how toothless a threat that is.   ...what 'support'..?   Even he can't get any support.

    The Briggyan Crisis
    Revolution

While the Emperor is distracted in Dacai, officials back home begin to take advantage of dissent.   One, a charismatic Half-Elf by the name of Gallatyn claims that the Emperor has forfeited his sacred duty of stewardship by allowing a Half-Orc to serve as an Imperial Legate. This wins him much support by many traditional elements of the Legions and almost overnight he becomes a grave threat to the legitimacy of Aenestorian's reign.   Not long after, a Human Keeper by the name of Arboghast claims that the Celestian's line has long since lost any legitimate claim to divine sanction of their rule. Witness the events in Dacai, the unrest amongst his own legions, and most damning of all, the retreat and general silence of Cybilla. The outspoken Priest is soon endorsed by a few elements of the Briggyan Church and ends up at the core of a popular uprising that demands the Emperor's abdication.   Even before the Emperor is able to return from Dacai, Gallatyn and Arboghast begin to war against each other, Gallatyn correctly viewing the Priests' claim as counter to his own position as well, given the he is (in theory) heir to the same blood.

    Betrayal of his Blood
    Era beginning/end

Following his Nephew's Ascension to the Throne, Sandallus-- the Emperor's brother,- leads a large force led by Aetius and several other tribal leaders to Merovin by way of Davomar. Sandallus' primary goal is to deal with a large force of Goblins that have been causing trouble in the region, which the Davomaran's had used as an excuse to succeed from the Empire, simultaneously dealing a threat to the Empire and bringing the Free Cities back into the fold.   Emperor Aenorius had no desire to go on campaign, being a somewhat timid child, and so his Uncle left him back at Capital. While Sandallus' was off on campaign, the Emperor's various advisors whispered in his ear of his Uncles' anger at being passed over for the Throne in favor of a child and issued renewed warnings against the Half-Orc "Barbarian" that had corrupted his Father. Warning that a powerful general, with a horde of Orc Barbarian's at his side, with the backing of one connected to the throne could be... dangerous..   The Emperor's Uncle managed to succeed in the first part of his campaign, and was resting in one of the "Free Cities" (negotiating with its leaders), when the Order came back that he was to return to the Capital forthwith. He was killed that very night, away from his men, while riding hard back to Northern Arn and the Capital.

Attempts at negotiations fall through, to the point that while marching through Imperial Lands on the way home Aetius' host is assaulted by the 3rd Legion,-- a legion that he had, not all that long ago, been officially in charge of,- a fact that comes into play during the battle when a large number of the soldiers are more loyal to him than their newly minted Half-Elven Commanders.   Now in charge of an even larger force, Aetius simply decides that--
    --while on his way home,-
he'll lay siege to Arn in exchange for the gold, supplies, and food that he's owned.   The siege lasts 6 months, largely because the Imperial House refuses to treat with him (other than sending the occasional Assassin). The Warlord's initial modest demands eventually give way to him simply deciding to starve the city out and attain it's unconditional surrender, afterwards allowing his host to sack it for three days, and then finally leaving with all that he'd asked for and more.   ...but not before he makes a few changes..

    Rise of the Demon-King
    Revolution

Genseric raises to a position as leader of a popular movement amongst Niocene's large Cath population, soon turning that general unrest into violent opposition to the rulers that had mistreated and oppressed the Tieflings of Skelles for millenia.   The actual war begins when Genseric's forces effectively take over the city of Gault, fortifying it and purging a fair portion of the Nobility (mostly those guilty of atrocity against native Cath). When the inevitable counterattack comes, the "Demon King" manages to push it back, at which point his momentum becomes basically unstoppable.   No few demons that had been hiding in Motlund join the Demon King's forces,-- no few of his followers making Pacts with such entities, even as the Demon King crushes them under his will, while others wield the Power of Shadow, and indeed, it even seems as if a newly arisen Dark Circle wields its power on behalf of the peoples' crusader.   The movement eventually manages to claim about half of Niocene, including the former capital, and is only stopped from expanding further to the North by fierce opposition from the until-then little known Sie'anth family.
