Calan (Language)
The Calan language is rich with dialects particular to different parts of the kingdom, ethnic groups, and social classes. Most speakers have a strong command of Standard Calan, thanks to its use in the Temporalist Houses of Knowledge and University.
Surnames
Calan family names may be preceded by one of two prepositions, "dolo" or "fom". Both prepositions share the simple meaning "of", indicating which family the bearer belongs to, however they signal different classes. Only families recognized as nobility by the Kingdom of Litticala may use the preposition "dolo" before their surname. Unauthorized claims to nobility may be fined or imprisoned by the crown, depending on the severity of the infraction. Common families may use the preposition "fom", or none at all. Families who take their name from their profession tend not to use any preposition. For example: Maravioso dolo Capiri is from the noble Capiri house, while Joannis fom Fenat is from a common family. Elario Pescara comes from a common family that does not use a preposition, though he would be entitled to call himself "fom Pescara".Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
