Long Moon Fever
Long Moon Fever, named for the rise in cases during the month, is a common disease in the Kingdom of Litticala, Naleed, and Charya.
Transmission & Vectors
Long Moon Fever is a waterborne disease, most commonly spread by the heavy rains during Flood Moon. Those who rely on river water rather than a well are more likely to contract the illness. River Walkers are also prone to infection, due to their worship practices.
Symptoms
One to two weeks after ingesting contaminated water, the infected will develop a high, lingering fever that leaves the body weakened and dehydrated. Exhaustion and delirium are common as the fever rises higher. Other symptoms include sensitivity to light and excessive thirst. In vulnerable populations or in cases where the disease is left untreated, the infected may fall into a coma and die.
Treatment
Those infected with Long Moon Fever must be kept hydrated with uncontaminated water. Fevers can be lowered with careful dosing of chillweed.
Prevention
Long Moon Fever can be avoided by drinking only uncontaminated water. In the absence of a clean source, contaminated water should be boiled before consumption.
Cultural Reception
Long Moon Fever is typically viewed as a disease of the poor, the uneducated, and immigrant populations. These populations are the least likely to have the resources or knowledge to avoid contracting the illness.
Some River Walkers believe Long Moon Fever to be a punishment or a judgement on those who are not faithful to Lady Cando, despite the illness appearing in other rivers.
