Captain Jastes

Captain Jastes was an ambitious captain of the White Lion Armada deployed on the Koan homeworld of Sera. He fought with a pneumatic gauntlet called the Juggernaut Arm, originally designed for amputees but which he had modified to give his perfectly healthy arm a boost of strength.   When the crew's lookout Appoline served in the White Lion Armada, Jastes served as her commanding officer and controlled her actions using a bomb collar around her neck. Howewever, the Party and Appoline outsmarted him, defeating him in battle and sending him plummeting to his death.

Eyes on the Prize

Already overconfident in his abilities, Captain Jastes star rose when he "captured" a vandal huntress turned serial killer named Appoline. Jastes fancied himself a keen observer and student of character, he believed he could "tame" the wild huntress.   He had already domesticated the wild strider hound, a species native to Tyrant were thought to be unable to be tamed due to no one being able to figure out what they ate. Jastes solved the conundrum by feedind them others of their own kind. He thought Appoline was much the same way, and as long as Jastes let her out to feed her cravings, she could be molded to serve him.   His plan seemed to work out at first. Appoline submitted to Jastes placing a bomb collar on her to keep her in line, and her keen skills of observation propelled his crew deeper into Koan territory than any other white lion ship. He captured an the artificer blacksite called Port Loa, secretly developing a mortar called a Thunder Cannon that could launch projectiles to targets across spheres.   The Artificer who could complete the project disappeared into hiding during the fighting, but with Jastes' favorite lookout, it was only a matter of time before they caught him. He got another surprise when a group of Corsairs penetrated his defenses. In his vanity, Jastes believed they had come to recruit him after witnessing his successes in the battlefied.

An Unforseen Defeat

Captain Jastes' many false assumptions cascaded into his undoing when Appoline found the artificer. It turned out that she was not out for blood in general, but on a specific quest for vengeance to kill those responsible for the destruction of her tribe, one of whom was the very artificer Jastes needed to complete his cannon.   He sent his men after Appoline and the artificer only to be confronted with his campaign's second false assumption. The Corsairs visiting him were not out to recruit him, but the vandall huntress who had slipped his grasp. Together the Corsairs and Appoline decimated his forces, destroyed the Thunder Cannon, and escaped on an ultralight glider.   As they escaped, Jastes realized his third false assumption when Appoline released a batch of mollusks into the ranks of his men--which it turned out to be what strider hounds actually ate. No longer needing their cruel masters who forced cannibalism onto them, they turned against Jastes' men.   In a last ditch effort to turn the tide, Jastes leapt onto the ultralight glider to battle the Corsairs. With Appoline's help, Anh and Wukong knocked him off, sending him plummeting to his death.
