Coralium

Coralium is a rare composite metal found throughout Craedock on every major continent, although only in specific locations. It is formed when a certain genus of coral leaves behind a strain of mineral deposits filtered out while feeding: when the coral dies it catalyzes the deposits and hardens into a crystalline, metal-like substance.

Properties

Physical & Chemical Properties

Coralium is multicolored in hue, a result of the biodiversity of coral life that causes its crystallization. When the coral fuses with the metal, it stains in, resulting in a kaleidoscopic pattern and iridescent sheen. It is not much harder than steel or iron, but has a lower melting point. It in theory could be used to forge a fully functional weapon or armor, but would have no benefit other than its appearance over easier to mine metals. As a result of this, it is typically used in the arts to create accent pieces or individual works.

Geology & Geography

In the Acronian Sea, coralium is typically found in a number of small reefs in the Barkgull Archipelago, and is mined by a few artisan guilds in Barkgull. In Nevvalair, it is found in reefs distributed along its northern coast, and is not excavated en mass. In Unitia, a small deposit exists off Canolith.   Several other reefs known to contain the metal are distributed throughout the world, and every few years a smal deposit is discovered.

History & Usage

Cultural Significance and Usage

Coralium is often used in the arts, and is functionally equivalent to something like steel or iron. Smiths might use coralium in ceremonial weapons or armor, or sailors might keep a nugget of it as a good luck charm.   Some artistic depictions feature Fenrey with her trident made of coralium, and one famous painting, the Convocation of the Feathered Stars, depicts the 13 major deities in congress, each of their weapons as well as their thrones being made of coralium.   Given its worldwide presence and its uniqueness as an explicitly oceanic metal, as well as its beauty and use, coralium has an intimate relation with Craedock's sailing culture and is in some places considered a symbol of Craedockan solidarity and unity.   Some governments have minted coins of coralium, but only rarely as it is simply not obtainable enough for common use. One coin of coralium would be considered a collector's item and could be worth hundreds if not thousands of gold, much more than its weight in value.
