Magic Item Crafting Rules

This system of crafting is for all Personal Permanent magic items and Consumable items crafted with the following tools;

  • Alchemist's Supplies: Offensive potions, buff potions, and debuff potions. (INT)
  • Calligrapher's Supplies: used to craft spell scrolls, talismans, and spell books. (DEX, INT, or WIS)
  • Carpenter's Tools: Used to make vehicles and structures made of wood. (DEX, INT, or WIS)
  • Cartographer's Supplies: Used to make maps, and required for all teleportation or blink items. (DEX, INT, or WIS)
  • Cobbler's Tools: Footwear. (DEX)
  • Glassblower's Tools: Items made predominantly of glass, goggles, glasses, and lenses. (DEX, INT, or WIS)
  • Herbalism Kit: Healing, curative, and antibiotic potions. (WIS)
  • Jeweler's Tools: Jewelry and items with precious gems incorporated. (DEX or INT)
  • Leatherworker's Tools: Armor and other items made predominantly of leather. (DEX or WIS)
  • Mason's Tools: used in the crafting of magic items made of stone, brick, or concrete. (STR or INT)
  • Painter's Supplies: Tattoos, seals, and magical embellishments. (DEX, INT, or WIS)
  • Potter's Tools: Items made predominantly of clay, or softer kinds of stone. (DEX or WIS)
  • Tinker's Tools: Items that wouldn't fall into the other categories. This tool needs a specific field of research for each individual crafting type. (DEX or INT)
  • Weaver’s Tools: Clothing and other items made predominantly of fabric. (DEX or WIS)
  • Woodcarver's Tools: Weapons and small size or smaller items made predominantly of wood or bone. (DEX, INT, or WIS)
  • Smith's Tools: Weapons and small size or smaller items made predominantly of stone and metal. (STR, INT, or WIS)

  In order to craft a magic item you need the following things;  
  • Blueprint. the plans for a magic item's crafting, which must be obtained in-game. Can be bought, researched, found, or created by the character.
  • Ability. your character needs to have the tool/kit needed to craft the item and met the Level requirement to craft the item.
  • Ingredients/Materials. your character must find the ingredients and materials in-game, which you may have chosen yourself or come from a specific blueprint. Specific items or properties might require higher quality materials.
  • Crafting Location: some magic items are only craftable in a higher rank of crafting location and/or the chance of success might be lower.
 

Starting Blueprints

When you become proficient in a crafting tool, your practice and research leads to a discovery. You gain 2 Uncommon blueprints that are not marked Unique, Unknown, or In-Progress.   When you gain Expertise in a crafting tool, your practice and research leads to a discovery. You gain 2 Rare blueprints that are not marked Unique, Unknown, or In-Progress.  

Magic Item Crafting

Once a character has meet the requirements they are able to begin the process of crafting. You must spend 5 Downtime Sessions crafting, at which point you attempt a Crafting Tool Check. The DC can be found here: Magic Items.   Consumable Magic Items can be crafted in batches of the same item, making up to Proficiency Bonus Batches at the same time with a single Crafting Tool Check.   • Critical Success Is when you roll 10 over the crafting DC. The magic item is completed and you manage to save 10% of the crafting cost.
  • Success Your attempt is successful and the magic item is completed.
  • Failure You fail to complete the magic item. You must complete 2 downtime sessions and pay an additional 10% of the crafting cost, to try again.
  • Critical Failure Is when you roll 10 under the crafting DC. You fail to complete the magic item. You must complete 2 downtime sessions and pay an additional 20% of the crafting cost, to try again.
  *Critical Success and Critical Failures can have other effects on the item's crafting. Your DM with have you roll an additional roll to determine effects.  

Crafting Tool Check

1d20 + Tool Bonus.   Up to three Artisans can craft on a single magic item together at a time. However the Crafting Tool Check is only completed by the main Artisan (chosen by the artisans). They receive a bonus based on the other artisans. They gain advantage for having help and gain per artisan a flat bonus of: +2 for Expertise Artisans, +1 for Proficient Artisan.  

Attunement requirement rules

The more attunement based effects on the item causes the attunemtn rule to be more specific.  

Fast Crafting

In some situations a Artisan may decide that they need to craft a consumable item quickly. By doing so they affect how long until the consumable expires, being lost. This doesn't effect the duration of the consumable if it is used.  
  • Craft in 1 min: lasts 10 mins
  • Craft in 10 mins: lasts 1 hour
  • Craft in 1 hour: Lasts 8 hours
