Kalyus the Great

The Great Kalyus Longstien

/*Rewrite for a more narrative feeling*/

The fifth king of the Lypian Empire of the North, Kalyus is one of the most renowned and loved rulers across the continent. Currently, he is also the only Mage king, all other kings having no power themselves. Known for his strategy in war, benevolent actions, and powerful magic, Kalyus is considered by his citizens as one of their greatest rulers of all time. During his reign as king, Kalyus spread the control of the empire to cover the entirety of the North. However, Kalyus died before being able to spread his conquest to the South.
"He is a great ruler. He helps everyone and has treated me kindly when I am in his presence. There is no need to worry any more mother; I am safe again."
— Unknown
Fygrion 10, 340 in a letter between a servant and their mother

Physical Description

Body Features

Described by many as a perfect man, Kalyus is distinguished by his lightly tanned fair skin, his long black hair, and lanky body shape. Many portraits of him show him at different ages, but as he changes there is very little variation between the years.

Strong, slim, and powerful, Kalyus doesn't have an imposing body. First appearances show him to be weak, or at least of average proportions, while facing him in battle or in any form of physical contest will quickly reveal the fact that he is abnormally strong, fast, and agile.

Magic Features

Signifying his magic, Kalyus' only blemish on his skin is an Iron Mark, signifying his capabilities in Iron Magic. In his possession, and almost always attached at his hip, the Iron Relic was transformed into a sword that allowed Kalyus to amplify his magic. It is always seen in his portraits and he was famously known for his possession of the Iron Relic that was named to by Kalyus' Sword in its form   Considering his skills a Mage, Kalyus is capable of all forms of Iron and Earth manipulation. He is known for his skills in crafting weapons and bending blades(or arrows) away from him in battle. Though never perfectly captured in a piece, there are mentions of it in literature and some artworks hint at this capability.

Personal history

"I will be king. Not because I want to, but because none of you have proved yourself worthy. Each of you has tried to kill another for power, and I don't wish to see this empire fall to another tyrant."
— Kalyus the Great

Early Life

Kalyus doesn't tend to speak about himself or his past, however much of what he has spoken about to the public has been very loose. It is known that he grew up religiously and that it continues to influence him as he grew to be himself.
  View Education

Education

Before his tenth birthday, Kalyus was schooled by his father at home. In school, he learned to read, write, and studied religion. However, he was discovered to have magic and he was taken in by the military where he spent several of the following years in the Mage Division, under the Iron Regiment learning to use his magic. This was one of the worst times of Kalyus' life as he was stolen away from his family; during this time, Kalyus was also subject to military learning while the military was still under the control of a tyrant leader.

Young Adulthood and Early Adulthood

Spending the beginning of his time learning magic, Kalyus eventually earned his Iron Mark. However, his studies on more magic were interrupted by ranks; the rising of ranks gave him the power to overcome the struggles he had faced before as a child. Quickly rising to rank, Kalyus rose in the Iron Regiments ranks until he was the leader of the Elite Platoon, where he spent his time from the ages of 19 to 23. However, as he neared the age of 24, Kalyus became the general of the Mage Division, holding the most powerful rank of any Mage at the time. He held the position for two years before rising further.

Rise to Power

During his 25th year, the resident King, a tyrant, was assassinated on the 17th of 13 340, leaving no heir to the throne. 13 days of discussion followed while generals from across the empire came to decide on the next king. Battles nearly broke out, but, showing his stronger side, Kalyus was able to stop it all and claim himself the new king.
  View Fall

Fall

Kalyus fell in battle, receiving his first-ever loss. Prior to his death, Kalyus had never received so much as a scrape in battle, but he was forced to face a powerful Storm Marked Mage with the Storm Relic

. This allowed the Storm Marked Mage to overpower Kalyus. His death was avenged however as the invaders lost the battle.

Legacy

Kalyus is known for being one of the greatest kings of all time. The Lypian Empire was greatly changed after his death, almost fully for the positive. He left a large throne to fill while also leaving his mark of the world. Kalyus' greatest legacy was that he completed the conquest of the empire and was able to restructure the system to use Yawiyx, an individual leader of a small province,

to control provinces allowing the king to rule over all of the empire, despite its size. With that, Kalyus had no children and the Yxouram, an assistant to the throne of the king and the king's Yawiyxc, was in an interim point, leaving the throne to be fought over just as he had received it himself.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Kalyus has a long list of accomplishments, reaching far and wide across his time, both before and during his time as king of the Lypian Empire. Of these achievements, most of them came during his time as king, though he had several key accomplishments during his years as a general.
"I am not a great king. I am simply raising the standards."
— Kalyus the Great
Gaeneian 18, 345 during a public speech
As a general, Kalyus was known for his ability to command. Under his leadership, the previously struggling, but powerful, Mage Division rose to be the most powerful division of the Lypain Empire's army and, quite possibly, the whole of the North and South. He was able to lead several charges into battle and never knew defeat as a general. Furthermore, Kalyus is known for saving a whole squad of soldiers, mages and regular, without aid in the middle of a war. Each marks a well-known accomplishment, though Kalyus had many less known accomplishments.   Becoming the King of the Lypian Empire was an accomplishment in of itself, however, it lead to some of Kalyus' most prolific achievements. Under his rule, the empire grew to be more prosperous than ever before, while easily surpassing all other empires throughout all of time. His in battle achievements continued as well, as during a variety of sieges and wars Kalyus was able to lead with an unprecedented victory rate. His final, and most impactful, accomplishment was that Kalyus lead the Lypian Empire to conquer the whole of the North without horrible amounts of bloodshed. This impacted many of the people his empire, and is, by far, his most notable accomplishment. Following the conquering of the North, Kalyus was also able to restructure the government power hierarchy, though he died before completing it. While holding the throne, Kalyus was also known for creating a more widespread religion, though it is more often considered to be a philosophy as it doesn't show a god being all-powerful. Even so, Kalyus' impact spread far across his rule as king and general, leaving a massive mark on the whole of the Lypian Empire.
"Kalyus is likely the greatest king that has ever lived in the North. He built the Lypian Empire up to what it is today."
— Unknown

/*Protag when asked about the death of the ruler*/

/*   Kalyus is also responsible for creating a road/tunnel that crossed the mountains*/

Failures & Embarrassments

Kalyus made many mistakes as a king, though he was always careful to keep always correct his mistakes. The only failures that lasted were that Kalyus was forced to take up arms against several different colonies in the North, as not everyone was willing to succumb to a treaty between them and the Lypian Empire to become annexed. Neither of his failures were large, but in his eyes, Kalyus saw each as a great failure.

Morality & Philosophy

Kalyus is known for his generous ruling. Having been raised under the idea of a polytheistic religion, and having since become atheist after discovering his magic, the lessons from childhood struck through. He had kept many ideals from his childhood religion, known for treating everyone equally and preferring to solve things without bloodshed. Furthermore, Kalyus is also known for not holding coins tight and freely spending them on his empire where needed. While still collecting taxes, Kalyus was still generous in the time frame in which they were required, hoping to give chance to everyone at any point that he could.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Kalyus is known for his driving quote, claiming:
"I don't wish to expand the empire for the empire; I seek to expand the empire for the people."
— Kalyus the Great
Fygrion 6, 340 during his inaugural speech and more

Social

Social Aptitude

Kalyus is known for preferring a life of solitude in introversion, but still being very charismatic and capable of easily handling larger crowds for speeches and smaller crowds for planning. The conversations that Kalyus partakes in will often display his characteristics, including that of being humble and having a very outward wish to help others before himself.

Kalyus is known for his skill at war strategies, charisma, and Iron Magic; however, Kalyus struggles with the morals of fighting in wars, but does so for the good of his citizens. Described by his citizens, everyone considers him to be patient, generous, benevolent, respectful, and intelligent.

Relationships

Kalyus is known for never being able to hold down a relationship during his reign as general and king. The exact reasons are unknown, though it is thought that it was due to Kalyus devoting his life to helping those around him instead of spending time on each individual. He had two girlfriends during his first five years as king, though neither lasted more than a single month.

Author's Notes

This was written for the Premier Politicians Challenge. I may return to it later to add more character and personality to bulk the article. As well, there may(or may not) be plans in the work for stories(in the form of prose articles) to catalog major events.

Whilst this is still a WIP, it already gives a good idea of what is genuinely good man. The quotes from unknown folk work really nicely as testimonials are a really nice way of showing the reader what the people he ruled over thought of him. I look forward to seeing this when it's finished!

Thanks so much! I'll let you know when I have a solid rewrite done. Hopefully this weekend.

You've got a very solid foundation here, Billings! I especially appreciate the little touches like the holiday to remember him and the abundance of quotes. If I have one criticism it's that he seems a bit perfect. His only notable failing was his defeat in his last battle and he didn't seem to have many troubles in his life either, though this is still a WIP and you were probably going to address that anyway. Apart from that and a few grammar mistakes, you're well on your way to making a very good final product!

Great job on this one Billings! You really took the time to fill out so many aspects of King Kalyus' life. I like your use of spoilers to collapse some of the earlier parts of his life. I think this article could really benefit from the usage of BBCode headers and separation but content wise it is on point!   Thank you for submitting to Premier Politicians!
