Magicians

Mortals with slightly longer lifespans that are descended from Math, the Father of Magic who was born of a Tylwythyn mother (in pure form) and a mortal father. His nine daughters started the nine bloodlines of Magicians. Magician blood is stronger in women (except for Math, who was the progenitor) and is manifest in their red hair and eyes. The more vibrant the red, the more powerful the magic.   Each of the nine Magician families elects a leader to speak for their family in the Cildraeth, the organisation of Magicians who meet via magical mirrors powered by the original magic of their lines.

The nine Magician families:

  1. Fflamfyre - descended from the eldest daughter of Math, Fflam; located in Goronnwg in Brython at their manor house in the city of X; Ffaraon and her mother Sanant belong to this family, both being the heads of their family and representing them at the Cildraeth. They are naturally gifted with fire, light, and electrical magic.
  2. Gwaeddol - descended from Math's second-born daughter, Gwae. They are naturally gifted with healing. They have lived in seclusion for years, and no one knows where any of them are now.
  3. Morddair - descended from Math's third daughter, Mordd. Her family is split into two, as she is the proginator of môrfolk, after being impregnated by the Wise Salmon. The children she had with her midling husband continued her sorcerer line, being well-versed in water-based magic. (This is why môrfolk can manipulate water in a magic-like way.) The Morddair family has been based in Oergwen for a long time, being related to the Llŷr family distantly and the môrfolk that live there. However, the last of their line were men who did not possess magic, and they are presumed to have effectively 'died out', although there is a chance the magic could present itself in a descendant further down the line (although they are targeted and killed with the law).
  4. Fflurfern - descended from Math's fourth-born daughter, Fflur. They are naturally gifted with botanical and earth based magic. They are based in Abergwellt and are very important to the Seisylt family. Their current head is Eyri, a young sorcereress with whom Ffara has a love-hate relationship. (Tali is also friends with her. She appears in both their chapters, ultimately joining Eifian's cause after surviving the Meet by not attending due to a premonition by Tali.)
  5. Brwyddon - descended from Math's fifth daughter, Brywdda. Her descendants are well versed in battle magic and warfare. Aer's mother, Aeroneth, was a fierce warrior and a descendant of this family through her father's mother, so she did not keep the surname and the line was presumed to be dead when she did not possess magic (although she did, it just manifested in her strength and power on the battlefield--her hair was auburn, not red, so no one assumed she was a sorceress), and she died in battle when Aer was young. The family was based in Lor for many years, so family records were hard to obtain. However, Aer did remember his mother mentioning the distant sorcerer blood, which is why he worked so hard to cover up his ancestry. Ffara is talented in combat magic because of this, and this is why her magic often explodes uncontrollably from her when she is angry or upset.
  6. Meiridan - descended from Math's sixth daughter, Meir, who built the Cauldron of Rebirth. The family are based in Frocor, often taking on the role of 'priest/priestess' of the Cauldron in Beddel. They are well-versed in necromancy and experimental magic. Their current head is a transman who calls himself Celain Corff; although an official member of the Cildraeth and the head of his family, he usually cannot be bothered to partake in their meetings, as he is more concerned with his own quests of knowledge and experimentation. He is not readily recognisable as a sorcerer, having shaved off his head and conducted many experiments on his own body, which make him appear skeletal, his skin stitched together from various other bodies.
  7. Awyrenthon - descended from Math's seventh daughter, Awyra. The family, being well-versed in flight, travel, and wind/air magic, has travelled outside of the Cythonic Isles and settled in far-away northern lands, where they are lauded as extremely powerful witches. Perhaps the most fertile family (yet also, for that reason, the weakest), most of their descendants now live far away in a land called Fulge. Their current head, an old woman named Wentha, checks into the Cildraeth frequently through the mirrors and is lively in conversation and eager for connection with the other sorcerers, despite being so far away. She speaks Cythonic with a slight accent, having been born and raised in a foreign country.
  8. Gwyseion - descended from Math's eighth daughter, Gwysei. They are well-versed in summonings and inter-dimensional magic, which lends them well to deals with creatures from other realms such as dark-dwellers and even ell/ffen. They are also equipped to summoning animals and elemental spirits for their aid. During the Coraniad invasion, they moved to Galdon and have since lived there in a position of courtly power, with the head of their family always being on the Queen's council. Their current head is Liffa, a woman in her thirties who urges Ffara to travel to Galdon for security and ends up becoming one of her dearest friends.
  9. Awenhir - descended from Math's ninth and final daughter, Awena. This family possesses magic of the oracular and poetic, yet they died out very early on--a hundred years before the start of the series. Tali is hinted to have been descended from this bloodline, which accounts for her prophetic bardic ability and the red tint in her brown hair.
