Dreunium
The city of Dreunium has a long, long history, stretching back over 2000 years into the reign of the Lisun Empire. Dreunium stands as the largest and most influential city in all the The Shattered Kingdoms, and has been rebuilt and renovated over and over, almost as often as the city-state has switched hands. Featuring large, sturdy stone walls, open crowded streets, buildings both centuries-old and new, the city proper contains many curiosities and secrets around every corner for the investigative traveller. The gates of Dreunium are open to everyone, meaning that some uncommon or otherwise ostracised races find themselves welcome in the city, provided they aren't rulebreakers.
Structure
The entire city-state is run by an organisation titled The Equilibrium. Military matters, state affairs and religion all mixed into one, The Equilibrium is devoted to the god of Law and Civilization, Erathis. Various sections of the Equilibrium have their own speciality, with the High Guard acting as the main military force and elite soldiers, the other branches acting as city guard and the magistrate. All of the Equilibrium obey the High Judge, leader of the organisation and of the city.
The High Judge is an elected veteran from the ranks of the Equilibrium that has proven themself an exceptional servant to the word of the law. They are considered to be closer to Erathis and her will than even the priests of the city, though there have been times of conflict over this. People who ascend to the rank of High Judge often begin to act differently the longer they hold the role, seemingly becoming less of an individual and more of a tool enacting justice. The duties of the High Judge include the running of the city and presiding over judicial matters that find themselves in the High Court, often only in cases that are a city-wide issue or otherwise notable.
High Guard
Enforcers
Prosecutors
Defenders
Executioners
The High Guard is an elite group of trained soldiers that make up the city-states standing army. Otherwise they act guards in Lawmakers Square, where the Courthouse and Jailhouse are located. Otherwise, they may be sent out to deal with threats beyond whats beyond what the other sections can handle like bandit groups or powerful monsters.
Enforcers are the section of the Equilibrium that fulfill the role of general city guard, patrolling the city and manning the gates. This also involves some minor bureaucracy with issuing temporary ID's to visitors of the city. Enforcers are armed with scale mail and dual scimitars, their limited magic is focused on assisting them take down crimes in action.
Prosecutors serve both in the streets and the Courthouse, it's their job to find evidence, receive confessions and present charges to the accused. Clad in scale mail and armed with both longsword and hand crossbow, their limited magic is more investigation based. They are prohibited from using this magic to detect the thoughts of anyone outside investigation, and are required to inform individuals before doing so.
Defenders on the streets act as both first responders to incidents, as well as keep Enforcers and Prosecutors in check, ensuring accused parties have equal say in their case. Defenders bear a longsword paired with shield, and wear half-plate. Their limited magic includes minor healing and restoration, and defensive measures.
Executioners are the smallest division of the Equilibrium, and act both as headsmen and bounty hunters for the city-state. All executions in Dreunium are public and held in Lawmakers Square, to demonstrate to the public that the execution is being done in a humane matter. If criminals escape justice and are marked for death, Executioners may be sent to hunt them down, or to accompany a regiment of High Guard.
Religion
While the Lisunese pantheon as a whole is worshipped throughout the city, the main three gods of Dreunium are Erathis, @Ioun and @Moradin, with Erathis being the patron god of the city-state. Lawmakers Square as a whole acts as a place of worship for Erathis, with the priests and official temple being house within the Courthouse.
The Library of the Knowing Mistress acts as both the center of knowledge within the city and as temple for Ioun. The library is famed across Eleron for its vast contents though it focuses on the local region of the Shattered Kingdoms, and its own local history. Multiple shrines to Moradin are located throughout the Trade Ward, and he is a popular choice of worship for the artisans of the city. Near the Golden Square lies the Sun Shrine, a singular shrine dedicated to the gods @Pelor, @Seranrae and @Lathander.
Agriculture & Industry
Dreunium's major industries include the stone from its vast quarries that go into the construction of the city itself and its close neighbours. The fields outside the city leave plenty of room for grazing and the city has a notable production of cattle and sheep.
Artisans and Craftsmen
Thanks to Dreunium's location many tradesmen and caravans pass through the city heading to or from Sien. In combination with the cities own production, many artisans and craftsmen are drawn to set up shop in the city in the now prolific Trade Ward. Blacksmiths, armourers, weaponsmiths, fletchers, tanners, jewellers, potters and tailors all find success within the city, smaller businesses local to the city and from Dreuniums neighbours set up stalls during the cities monthly market. The large variety in the populace of the city has also aided in its rich culinary scene, with cooking practices from all over Eleron and beyond being available for one to sample."Don't let the Equilibrium and serious-faced guards fool you- this isn't a drab city at all! You should see it during Midwinter, the lights are so pretty and my sales go through the roof!"
Old Ruins
Dreunium is built on the remains of a destroyed Imperial city, believed to be Rynmel. Some of the original buildings still stand and have been renovated and repaired into liveable conditions. Recently in the interest of preserving history, sites still containing original remains of the city are not allowed to be demolished unless severe safety concerns arise.Pre-Equilibrium?
Before the rise of the Equilibrium, Dreunium was in a similar state to the rest of the Shattered Kingdoms - constant small scale fighting and changing ownerships. Dreunium has been under the rule of about a dozen or so recorded kings, barons and lords in the past, but only flourished to its current state under the jurisdiction of the Equlibrium. Though some people believe the city places too much value in the word of the law as opposed to the spirit of the law, the majority agree life in Dreunium is better now than it ever was in it's more tumultuous past.
